That’s fine. Who needs them? Perhaps they both have plans after we make it through the next two days. But so do I. And I have plenty to do between now and then. I need to convince Detective Alan Branson to reopen the case. He will sigh, too, be reluctant at first. But I will corner him. And he’ll enjoy that. Trust me. I know men. I finally have the evidence I need.

I learned two things last night. One was about David. I realize now his multimillion-dollar plan for the future doesn’t include me. I may have been clinging on to a dream, a vision of our future together that could never come true. Denial is such a powerful thing.

Still, nothing breaks through that denial like proof. I open my phone and read his texts, the ones he had with “the office” just before he walked out the door.

Kylie: I’m here at the house!!! Waiting!!

David: Be there in 10.

Kylie: I want to go inside!!

David: Don’t you dare go in without me happy face emoji

Charming, I know. I drop my phone on the kitchen counter, punch my left palm with my right fist. My heart thumps with rage. Pain shoots through my jaw. I’ve been played. I want to throw something. But I won’t. Not now.

On the plus side, I have an unexpected ally in the note writer. I take a deep breath and force myself to settle down.

Don’t you just love it when the plot thickens?

9:30 a.m.

I check the dashboard and confirm I’m driving fast. It’s because David has a head start on me. I know exactly where he’s going. But I can’t afford to be stopped, so I ease off the accelerator a bit. Slow and steady wins the race.

Even though I know I’m fooling myself, my heart hopes David is heading to the new house alone. Or just maybe I’m reading things wrong. Perhaps his assistant, Kylie, is meeting him there, but that’s only to help with the key transfer, finish up all the paperwork, that sort of thing. She’s helping him keep the new home a surprise for me, and Betsy. She’s excited for our new, fresh start. That’s why she’s anxious to see inside. Could that be the case? The truth?

I realize I’m holding on to threads. It’s as if the tapestry of our marriage has unraveled, and this new home is the only thing that can mend it.
