Hoffman’s office is at the end of the hall, closest to the courts. Makes sense. I knock. When he opens the door, he doesn’t mask his shock. “Wow, Jane. What do I owe this surprise? I hope I didn’t upset you yesterday.”
“Well, I needed to know. So thank you.” I sigh and drop into the chair facing his desk. “And actually, I need your help. I want to talk to Josh, Betsy’s old boyfriend. Can you help me get in touch with him?”
“Of course. Josh is back. Graduated with honors. I’ll call his mom if you’d like,” Hoffman says.
“Back? From where? Isn’t he supposed to be finishing his senior year with Betsy?” I lean forward. This is an interesting development.
He leans against his desk, arms folded. “He went away to boarding school for senior year. Some fancy place back East and it was a great move. He’s off to Princeton in the fall.”
A light bulb pops on in my slow brain. I whisper, “He wasn’t here all school year?”
Hoffman looks around, even though we are the only ones in the room. “It’s not a secret. I mean, Betsy didn’t tell you?”
Not exactly. “I do know they broke up recently.” And now Betsy is with Bo. Something is nagging at the back of my mind, a worry that Betsy may be one step ahead of me. No, that’s not possible. I focus on Hoffman. “I need to talk to Josh. Please, can you help me?”
“I’ll call him now. And, Jane?” Hoffman pauses.
What now? “More bad news?” I lean back in the chair.
“No, not really. It’s probably nothing—it’s just the tennis ladies. You know how they talk. And since your falling-out with Melissa, well, I’m sure it’s nothing.” He flushes. We all know he loves the gossip as much as they do.
“What are they saying about me, Hoffman?” I feel my fists clench. I mean, you’d think we were all in middle school.
“I try to keep up with everything. Everyone. Help when I can. I mean, with a divorce rate of 73 percent in wealthy beach towns, I just want to help make a difference. Keep families together.”
Oh crap. He’s heard something about David. It’s not surprising. “Tell me.”
“I know you’re under so much stress, and so much heartache. But I did want to tell you to pay some attention to your man. Somebody else seems to have her eyes on him. And she’s making moves.”
Kylie.
“What? Who? No, he wouldn’t.” I feign surprise. It was only a matter of time before people spotted them together. The memorial ceremony may have been the trigger.
