Suddenly the music changed from current rock to dance music. Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” blared through the speakers. People in various states of intoxication rushed to the dance floor. Mira grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the crowd as she shouted, “Let’s go!” over her shoulder.
Finding an open space in the crowd, Mira threw her arms above her head and danced with abandon. Normally, Jill never saw herself as a dancer. But after two strong drinks, the beat seeped into her body and she reached for Mira’s hips to match her movements. If she hadn’t understood Mira’s intentions before, she now had a good idea of what she wanted. Her hands roamed freely across Jill’s torso. After dancing through two songs, Jill stepped back, craving space.
As she did, she bumped into someone behind her. Reagan’s annoyance transformed into a smile wide enough to crinkle the corners of her hazel eyes. “We meet again, Ms. Murphy.” Jill felt a tiny shudder beneath her lips as they grazed Reagan’s ear. “Where’s Gwen and your other friend?”
“Gwen headed home to her husband. Carly’s dancing with that redhead over there.” She pointed off to her left where a pretty brunette with bangs was dancing with another woman.
“Got dragged out here, huh?”
Reagan shrugged. “Kinda, but I don’t mind dancing. It’s been a while. What about you? You don’t seem like the dancing type.”
Jill found Mira behind her hitting on another woman. She threw a thumb over her shoulder and leaned forward again so Reagan could hear her. “I’m not. It was her idea.”
Reagan stepped back and waved her away. “I’m sorry. I’ll leave you to it then.”
“Wait.” Jill gripped Reagan’s wrist and stepped forward until their bodies touched. “Don’t go. I just met her tonight. It’s nothing. I swear.” Looking down at the grip she still had on Reagan’s wrist, she let go. “I’m sorry. I seem to be manhandling you tonight.”
Reagan placed Jill’s hand on her hip. “I don’t mind.”
The corner of Jill’s mouth turned up, and she stepped into Reagan’s space once again. They moved to the beat of the song, and Jill melted into Reagan’s warmth. She never imagined she’d enjoy dancing but being in Reagan’s arms felt right.
As they swayed, Reagan gripped the back of Jill’s neck and pulled her close. Reagan’s hot breath washed over her skin and she stifled a groan. She dipped her head, lightly brushing her lips below Reagan’s ear. Jill pulled back and met Reagan’s fiery gaze, sending a shot of heat straight to her core. She licked her lips in anticipation, but before she could lean in, a firm grip on her shoulder pulled her away.
