“I know. Honestly, I’m not the best at it either. We can learn together. Sound good?”

Jill wordlessly nodded and climbed into bed, pulling the sheets up to her shoulders.

Reagan sat on the edge of the bed and brushed Jill’s hair behind her ears. “Are you taking tomorrow off?”

“No, I need to get back to the office.”

“Don’t you think you should give yourself a bit of a break? This might be your body telling you that you need to slow down.”

“I can’t. There’s too much to do.”

Reagan sighed. “Can you promise that you’ll think about it if you’re still feeling crappy in the morning?”

“Maybe.”

“I guess that’s the best I can ask for.”

“Mm-hmm,” Jill replied, reveling in Reagan’s light strokes on her scalp. “That feels nice.” Her eyes fluttered shut until she remembered an earlier conversation. “Did you eat anything? You said you’d eat later, but it’s night now,” she mumbled.

Reagan let out a quiet chuckle. “I’m okay.” Reagan bent down and kissed Jill on the forehead.

Those warm, soft lips were the last thing Jill felt before drifting off to sleep.

Chapter Thirteen

Reagan sat at her desk, scrolling through bank statements but not registering any of the information. Ever since leaving Jill’s apartment, she had wondered if Jill was feeling better. The urge to check in had been strong, but fear had always held her back. She understood that putting herself out there meant risking her heart, whether it was with Jill or someone else, but she had to admit that the risk was heightened with Jill. Something was there and she couldn’t try to deny it anymore. On the surface, Jill might not be the ideal girlfriend, but a gut feeling kept telling her to dig deeper.

She thought back to the picture she’d found in Jill’s apartment. A happy kid whose eyes didn’t have the shadows of pain, not like Jill’s eyes had now. Reagan wondered if she could unearth that happiness again. As thoughts whirled in her mind, she sat up and opened a browser. A quick search told her that the Pacers had their home opener that night. Reagan rested her chin in her hand as she stared at the screen. Would she go?

Only one way to find out. She pulled out her phone and called Jill’s cell, wanting to bypass Ash.

“Jillian Jacobs.”

She sounded distracted. “Hey, Jill, um, it’s Reagan.”

“Reagan,” she breathed.

“Yeah. How are you? Are you feeling better?”

“I am.” Jill cleared her throat. “Thanks to you.”

Reagan grinned. “Great! Listen, I was just calling to see if you’d want to go to the Pacers game tonight. Home opener.”

“A basketball game? Really?” Jill asked with a scoff.
