- About the Author
She sounds positively giddy. "Suicide Watch is gone. The cops shut it down and Harbinger is being investigated."
That gets my attention, even if I'm not sure what I feel about it beyond a tiny seed of anxiety nestling in the pit of my stomach. "What?"
"A family of one of the members who offed themselves found the site in his internet history and reported it. They're investigating because there are a lot of minors registered."
I run a hand over my face, trying to clear my head. What a time for me to be out of it. "They can't arrest someone for having a forum for people who want to die."
"No, but they can arrest someone for assisting suicide. Just because he didn't pull the trigger or give them the pills, he still went into it with the knowledge of what they planned to do and didn't phone for help afterward."
The photos, I remember. We talked about Harbinger being there with some of those people when they died. Then it dawns on me—
"Joey?"
Casper is silent but I can hear her breathing.
It suddenly makes sense why Casper freaked out when Joey died. Why she sounded so distant when the website first went down. Why she's so excited now. "I'm not sure if I'm following. Harbinger was there? How do you know?"
"Because he posted the picture. That was how I found out Joey was gone. He's spent the last month telling me he was doing better, that he thought he wanted to hang in there a bit longer. He wasn't ready to go, Vince. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, Harbinger arranges a meeting with him and Joey's dead? It makes no sense."
No. It doesn't.
My insides are so cold. Is that what Harbinger does? Talks people into offing themselves? Joey was from the Chicago area. The more I think about it, so were the other members whose photos were taken by Harbinger. Either they lived in Chicago or they were within driving distance from it.
It's possible he hasn't just been witnessing suicides, he's been helping them.
Then I think about Jessica and I wonder if that makes me no better than Harbinger. I could've grabbed her, could've stopped her. I was close enough. But all I did was ask her name and watch as she flung herself into oblivion.
I would laugh if I wasn't so close to crying.
I wanted so desperately to feel something when Maggie died, and now I'm feeling entirely too much. There is no happy medium.
"Does that mean anything for us, do you think? They have our information, but it's not like...they have names and numbers."
"Don't know. They have IP addresses. They could track everyone if they really wanted, but I guess the question is...how important is it? They're more likely to go after minors."
I pause. "You're seventeen."
"Good thing I'll probably be dead before they get around to finding me, huh?" She sounds genuinely amused by this fact. I am going to be sick.
