Prin swings her feet again and looks out of her own window. She tries to work out how long Jane has been with them now. It must be a month, at least. She still isn’t sure whether Jane will go back home at the end of the summer holidays. Mum and Daddy haven’t really said anything about that. Although, she thinks she heard them talking about Jane coming to school. To the same school that Prin is at, though of course she wouldn’t be in Prin’s class. Prin thinks she wouldn’t mind if Jane stayed longer. She thinks she wouldn’t mind if Jane never went back home.
Prin squints against the sunshine. It’s coming right in through her window, right into her eyes. She wishes she had sunglasses like Mum’s.
Prin has got quite used to having Jane live with them. The only thing she doesn’t like is when Jane has those bad dreams. Then Prin has to get up and make her stop: get into bed with her and show her the zoetrope. That lovely couple dancing. She explains to Jane about the Make-Believe, how she only needs to picture it, and it’s real. She thinks Jane is beginning to understand. Prin spins the zoetrope at just the right speed and tells Jane to imagine anything she wants. Then Jane calms down and soon enough they fall back to sleep.
It makes Prin a bit sleepy just thinking about it now and she leans her head against the car window. In fact, she must have actually dozed off for a bit then, because the next thing she knows, Mum is opening Prin’s car door, smiling down at her and saying, ‘We’re here!’
It’s a little bit of a walk to the beach, but Prin doesn’t mind; she knows it will be completely worth it. Daddy gives them each something to carry from the car boot. Jane gets the buckets and spades, and Prin takes the big waterproof bag with all their towels in it. She is quite big and strong enough to carry that. Mum looks after the bag with the sunscreen and the important items like wallets and keys, and Daddy carries the big cooler box that has their lunch and snacks inside.
Jane says she’s thirsty when they get to the sand, and Mum fishes out cartons of orange juice for her and Prin. She rubs sunscreen on them both while they drink and Prin shifts her feet about impatiently in the sand.
