Ten minutes later, I walked into Krüger’s Tavern, the town’s bar. It’s a beautiful old wood-built place with a German beer cellar theme: soft fur throws on the seats, a roaring fire and really good beers on tap. It’s popular with the tourists, so there are new women every night, all in a thrill-seeking, holiday mood.
I headed straight for the bar, where two women were chatting and giggling as they waited to order. One had straight black hair cut into sharp bangs and was in a silver sequined top and short skirt. The other was pale and curvy, with long walnut tresses and a bottle-green dress. I slid in next to the black-haired one. She turned and found herself looking right into my eyes. I gave her a Danny Special, a grin that’s one-third warm and friendly, one-third cocky and teasing and one-third I want to do wicked things to you. Her lips parted. Her throat bobbed as she swallowed.
“I’m Danny,” I told her. “And who are you?”
Five minutes later, the three of us were sitting on bar stools, me in the middle, and each of them had a bare thigh pressed against my leg. I’d learned that Terri (black hair and sequins) was here on a much-needed girls’ getaway with her BFF Vanessa (pale and curvy). They were both from Seattle: Terri, a flight attendant, had wangled them cheap flights and their mission was to help Vanessa, a wedding planner, forget a painful breakup. We were doing flaming shots, they were getting me to say things in my London accent and, from the way Terri was looking at me, all wide-eyed and urgent, she was debating whether to be a good friend and let the shy, broken-hearted Vanessa have me or take me for herself. Another half hour and I reckoned I could gently introduce the idea that maybe both of them could be happy.
But something was wrong. They were gorgeous, confident, flirty…everything I look for in a woman. So why, when I looked at Terri’s tanned, bare thigh and the soft cleavage revealed by Vanessa’s dress, did my mind keep going back to Erin, taking off her layers? To that golden braid swishing back and forth like a cat’s tail as she walked, drawing my eyes down to that heart-shaped ass?
