Harley spotted Callaway just as the Boeing 747-8 VIP came screaming down to the tarmac, where it slowed and began to taxi around to its designated terminal. Callaways attention was on the private jet, and he did not notice Harley until she had nearly reached him.
He turned toward her, startled. Then his face relaxed into a tired smile.
Three hundred and sixty-seven million dollars, he said.
Harley frowned, uncomprehending. What?
Thats what that jet is worth.
Harley glanced at the jet, but she was not particularly interested in the transportation methods of billionaires. Not at that moment, anyway.
Listen, she said, weve been overlooking somethingsomeone, that is.
Its a high-end chauffeur service, Callaway went on as if he hadnt heard her, his eyes focused on the jet. Roth sends out his drivers to pick up guests from Albuquerque, Santa Fe, even as far as ClovisI know because Ive been following them. Got tired of writing down the same license plate numbers, if you can believe it.
I can believe it, Harley answered. Then she pivoted to the reason she had tracked him down. I put out an APB on Candy.
Callaway nodded as the jet rolled to a stop at its terminal. I heard it over the radio. Police are watching every train station and airport from here to Tucson. If shes within that net, well catch her. He gave Harley a sidelong frown.
What? Harley said.
You sure shes not victim number four by now?
Harley had considered this. It was possible, but she didnt think it likely.
Candys different, she answered. All three of the girls knew Candy, right?
Right.
But they didnt know each other.
As far as we know.
And Candylets be honest, but shes not like the others. She has money, runs in higher social circles. The other young women were all from poor backgroundslower middle class, at best.
Callaway nodded slowly, watching as the door of the plane opened and the passengers began filing out. So shes not the killers type. Is that what youre saying?
Im saying she might have other uses.
Like luring the girls to Roths ranch so he can do what he wants with them and then dispose of them?
Harley smiled. It was not a smile of enjoyment, but of satisfaction at hearing Callaway reach the same conclusion she had.
You hit the nail on the head, she said. If we can get Candy on record, she may flip on Roth.
Callaway grunted. First we have to find her.
Suddenly he stood up straight. Following his gaze, Harley watched three men, all of them in suits and sunglasses, leave the jet and enter the airport. Callaway sighed wearily.
No girls, he said. Not unless they pick them up on their way back to the villa, which I doubt. Roths being careful now because we spooked him.
