Callaways face grew thoughtful, as if he were trying to remember. Gee, I think I did hear that. You can do jail time for threatening a federal employee, cant you?
Up to six years in prison, Harley replied. How does that sound?
They both stared at Lucas, waiting.
Finally he snorted, shaking his head. Fine, you want to see whats in there? Go ahead. He stepped aside, crossing his arms.
Callaway gestured for Harley to check it out. He was going to keep an eye on their new friend.
Harley retrieved the briefcase and set it on the ground.
Be careful, Lucas said. That equipments expensive.
Harley opened the case, revealing a drone with four propellers, a controller, and a charging unit.
You map the mines with a drone? Callaway said, surprised.
No, I go in there myself because I have a death wish. Lucas shook his head. Dumbass.
Harley pulled out the controller and turned it on. The screen lit up.
Lucas frowned, taking a step forward. What are you doing with that?
Easy, Callaway warned. Let her do her thing unless you want to spend the next twenty years of your life behind bars.
Just seeing what youve been up to, Harley murmured, her fingers moving over the screen.
Lucas was growing more agitated. His nostrils flared as his breathing quickened.
Whatever youre doing, Callaway thought, hurry it up!
Lucas shifted his weight from foot to foot. He glanced at the gun in Callaways hand, as if measuring his chances of lunging for it.
Then Harley said, You should take a look at this, Callaway.
She pivoted the screen so that Callaway could see it. The recording showed a birds-eye-view of a pool party swarming with bikini-clad women. Then it moved toward a second-story bedroom window, through which they could see a couple undressing as they urged one another toward the bed, kissing all the way.
I think I know where this is going, Callaway said dryly.
Harley stopped the recording and shook her head, looking disappointed.
What? Lucas sneered. Thought youd find a snuff film? His eyes narrowed as he watched Harley opening files. What are you doing?
Im sending myself a copy of all your hard work, she answered. You did spend some time actually mapping mines, didnt you?
He shook his head at her and looked away, disgusted. When she had finished transferring the files, she closed the briefcase and set it aside. Then she opened her phone and navigated to a picture of Lisa Powell.
Recognize her? she said, holding up the picture for Lucas to see.
Nope, Lucas answered, looking bored.
Harley switched to a picture of Theresa Flowers. What about her?
Nope. Should I?
They were both murdered, left in mines.
The color drained from Lucass face. He glanced at Callaway, then back at Harley. Wait a minute. You think I had something to do with this?
