Candy, Jake said. Callaway glanced up to see the boy leaning against the door, his arms folded. Callaway hadnt seen him reenter the room.

Yeah, that's it, Jakes mother said. I remember because Lisa was always talking about this Candy like she was her ticket out of here. She had dreams, my Lisa. She was going to see the worldGermany, France, the Mediterranean, you name it. She had this map in her room…

She broke off and began to sob. Harley rubbed her back, then nodded at Callaway to continue.

It's going to be alright, he said. We'll find out what happened to her.

No, it won't be alright, Jake said, his voice flat and expressionless. You'll never know what happened. This will just be another cold case you cant solve, because nobody really cares what happens to us, do they? Were just trailer park trash to everyone else.

Callaway glanced at him. He saw a bit of himself in the boys defiance. Its okay to grieve, son, he said.

Jake snorted. Yeah, because thatll bring her back.

The words reminded Callaway of his mother, a stern Puritan woman whod rarely had any use for emotions. In the Callaway household, grief had been something to get over, or at the very least ignore.

No, it wont bring her back, Callaway agreed. But it may bring you back.

He returned his attention to Mrs. Powell, leaving Jake to think over his words. What did Lisa and Candy do together?

I dont really know, she admitted, then gave her son a helpless glance.

I followed them a time or two, just to see what they were up to, Jake said grudgingly. They went shopping. Bought some fancy dresses, too.

That's all? Callaway said.

Jake shrugged. Isnt that what girls dogo shopping and buy dresses? Besides, what else is there to do around here?

Do you know where Candy lives? Harley asked.

Jake glanced at his mother. She's out in Bedford Heights. Real fancy place. Drives a BMWyou know, the 7 Series?

Finally, something solid to go on, Callaway thought. Anyone else Lisa was hanging out with?

She kept to herself most of the time, Mrs. Powell said. That's why it surprised me so much to see her spending all that time with Candy. She was a dreamer, my Lisabut I think Candy knew that. Maybe that's what they had in common.

Is there anything you can tell us that might help us catch the person who did this to Lisa? Harley asked. Anyone who might have wanted to hurt your daughter?

Mrs. Powell shook her head. Lisa was a sweet, sweet girl. She never hurt anyone. She began to sob again.

Eager to escape Mrs. Powells mournful gaze, Callaway rose to leave. If you think of anything you might have forgotten to tell me, you have my number.

Something glimmered deep in Jake's eyes. Promise me youll shoot the guy who did this.

Jake! Mrs. Powell chided.
