  70. About Brandon Massey

“She was supposed to go home at the end of the weekend,” he said. “I’m not a big fan of unplanned visits from anyone, you know that about me.”

Monica was trembling. “I’m getting to know my biological mother for the first time in my entire life, Troy. I think a little flexibility is warranted here. Is that too much to ask?”

“As soon as she shows up, Duchess is dead. The very next day. Don’t you find that odd, Monica?”

“Your mother left her outside.”

“That’s bullshit.” Troy ground his teeth. “My mom volunteers at an animal shelter, for crying out loud, there’s nobody I know who’s more responsible when it comes to pets.”

“She’s not perfect. She made a mistake.”

“We don’t know anything about Grace. Not a damned thing. With Lily gone, we don’t know anyone who can vouch for a single thing she’s told us.”

She almost told him about Reverend McBride’s call earlier that afternoon—I know one person who knows her—but realized that was no trump card for her to play, either. As Grace had shared, Lily had abandoned the reverend’s church because he’d been chasing after young girls—including Grace, mostly likely. The scandalous old man was hardly a credible source and was best avoided.

“Guess what?” Troy said. “Your mother’s been flirting with me, too. Hell, I can hardly call it flirting, it’s borderline assault. She grabbed my crotch and said she wanted me to fuck her.”

Monica only stared at him. He showed her his wrists. She saw faint purple marks on his flesh.

“See these bruises? She grabbed me. Last night. When I refused to play along with her seduction. She’s a helluva lot stronger than she looks, unbelievably so.”

“Are you sure that one of your other women didn’t get a little rough with you?” Monica asked.

When she saw the flash of shock in Troy’s eyes, she knew the spear had struck its target. Her heart twisted.

“What the hell are you talking about?” he asked. “I’m telling you the truth, Monica. Grace is dangerous. We need to get her out of here.”

“She’s welcome to stay here as long as she wants,” Monica said. “She’s my mother. I don’t have anything left to say on the subject.”

“Dammit, you aren’t listening to me!”

“I’m listening, all right. If you’re really cheating on me, Troy, like I’m starting to believe you are, you’ll be the one packing your bags and getting out of this house.”

Without waiting for his reply, she walked out, trembling and teary-eyed, but feeling more empowered than she had felt in weeks. How dare he accuse her mother of those terrible, ridiculous things? Who could have believed any of that?
