How was any of this possible?

Because of the absurdity of it all, he doubted Monica would believe him. She didn’t trust his motives and would assume he was fabricating a story to turn her against Grace. He saw little point in telling her.

“Get me some new, cleaner samples and we’ll give it another run,” Sullivan said.

Troy actually laughed at the request. “Not happening. Grace is on to me, now. Things with her have gotten a lot more serious.”

“What happened?”

“The other night, she slipped me something, in some food, I think,” Troy said. His face burned with shame. “It knocked me out. When I woke up . . . let’s just say she had her way with me and leave it at that.”

“Had her way with you, like, sexually?” Sullivan asked.

“Is there any other way? Yeah, man. She tied me up to a bed. It was some freaky shit.”

“That’s rape, Doc,” Sullivan said. “It’s a felony.”

“I’d never be able to prove it. Me, raped by an old woman? No one would ever believe that.”

“Yeah, hate to admit it but you’ve got a point.”

“She did something much worse, to my mom. I think she drugged her, too. My mom’s in the hospital now.”

“And after all of this, your wife is still Team Grace?”

“All day long. I think Grace is slipping her something, too, to influence her. She won’t listen to a word I say.”

“What about the spy cam I gave you? That turn up anything?”

Troy’s lips puckered. “Had a little mishap there, but it’s back in place. You were going to run down the names in those address book pics I sent over.”

“You’ll have my report first thing in the morning—I think you’ll find it interesting. Are you heading home?”

“I don’t have anywhere else to go,” Troy said.

“Be careful, Doc. I’ve got a really bad feeling about where this is headed.”

Part Three

Monica picked at her dinner. Due to her sore gums and corroding teeth, she had to slice each piece of food into small portions in order to eat, and then chewing it still hurt—and she eventually became too weary with the overall effort. Perhaps it wasn’t the attempt at eating that wore her out, but her declining state in general. Regardless of the reason, as she sat at the table with her family, she became so tired that her eyelids felt as if they were weighted with lead coins.
