Wanda didn’t reply, just offered a sour expression. Her mother had taught her that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. The truth was, the dad, Dr. Troy, was one of those I’m-an-MD-and-I’m-better-than you types that Wanda had always despised. He might have been a fine man, but his demeanor rubbed her the wrong way.
“I get you,” Officer Chocolate said with a curt nod. He nodded toward the school entrance. “Looks like we got a visitor.”
Wanda checked the surveillance display, which gave live color footage of various parts of the campus, including the front door. A woman that Wanda immediately recognized as Dr. Monica approached the locked front entrance.
“That’s the mother,” Wanda said to Officer Chocolate.
“Didn’t waste any time, did she?” he said.
Dr. Monica rang the buzzer at the door. The bell on Wanda’s desk chimed.
Don’t allow anyone except me to take my children out of school, Dr. Troy had said.
With only the slightest hesitation, Wanda hit the button to unlock the doors.
Dr. Monica swept inside. Her hair was tousled, and she wore a winter overcoat and heels. She was unexpectedly glamorous. Usually when Wanda had seen the pediatrician she was wearing scrubs.
Officer Chocolate gave her a once-over and appeared to like what he saw, too. Jealously nibbled at Wanda’s heart, but what did you expect from a man?
Dr. Monica approached the desk. “Good afternoon. I’m here to pick up my children, Troy and Lexi Stephens. There’s been a family emergency, I’m afraid.”
There’s something different about her, Wanda thought. Something about her tone. It was oddly formal.
“Your husband called, a few minutes ago,” Wanda said, just to gauge the woman’s reaction.
“Of course, he would have,” Dr. Monica said, and her eyes narrowed. “He’s trying to use our children as pawns in a selfish little game of his.”
Whoa, I wouldn’t want to be on her bad side, Wanda thought.
“Anything you want to discuss, ma’am?” Officer Chocolate asked, thumbs hooked on his belt.
“It’s important for the children to be with their mother during this family crisis,” Dr. Monica said, and her gaze shifted to Wanda. Her eyes had softened. “Woman to woman, I think you understand.”
“Of course I do.” Wanda offered what she hoped was a sympathetic smile.
She picked up her two-way radio to notify the teachers to bring the Stephens children to their front desk so their mother could take them.

Driving to the school, Troy broke almost every traffic law to get his kids before Grace could grab them. Although he’d told the woman at the front desk to release the children only to him, no one else, he wouldn’t relax until Junior and Lexi were safe with him and Monica.
