  70. About Brandon Massey

A hand came over the lip of the doorframe and seized Grace’s ankle. It snatched her leg from underneath her, breaking her balance and pulling her through the doorway.

Screaming, Grace dropped away from the cable car and plummeted into the twilight.

Troy flung his leg inside, crawled into the cabin.

Monica pulled him into her arms.

Quiet, they held each other close as the cable car glided back to earth.

Nine months later

“Are you ready for this, babe?” Troy asked.

Late on a Saturday afternoon in August, they stood in the lobby of the Holiday Inn in College Park, Georgia. Lexi and Junior twittered around them, restless with anticipation.

Monica clasped Troy’s hand. Holding his hand didn’t hurt anymore. After several grueling months of physical therapy, cosmetic surgery, medication, and extensive nutritional support, she had regained nearly all of her former strength and pushed back the symptoms of premature aging. While she had needed orthodontic surgery to repair her teeth, her hair had grown back, thick and dark. Her skin reacquired its elasticity. Her joints were flexible, her bones strong.

Troy’s mother, Pat, had recovered as well, though she would walk with a cane for the rest of her life.

Psychologically, Monica had mostly found her way back to a good place, too. Sometimes, though not as often as before, she still had nightmares about her mother, heard her voice echoing in her dreams: You belong to me, child.

But the thing that had once been known as Grace Bolden was gone forever. Upon falling hundreds of feet through the air and striking the ground, its body had erupted into flames, an incinerating fire that had left behind only a mound of harmless ashes that soon fluttered away in the wind.

They were safe from Grace. But going inside that hotel banquet room was going to be a major step into a new chapter.

With her blessing, using Grace’s journal, Troy had undertaken the task of organizing a family reunion of sorts. Of her sisters, and their families. There were seven of them, including her, between the ages of forty and seventeen.

Seven of them with identical DNA. Seven of them with a story to tell of how their lives had unfolded.

But only one sister had encountered their mysterious common mother and lived to tell the tale.

“Seven Sisters Reunion,” read the printed sign standing on the small table outside the closed banquet hall doors.

“I’m ready,” Monica said. “It’s time I finally meet the rest of my family.”

Gathering her husband and children around her, she went inside.
