Let it go, she warned herself. My mother’s doesn’t know Troy, and she doesn’t know me, either. She’s just talking. It means nothing.
A hot shower would help clear her mind. It always did.
She stripped out of her bra and panties. As she was turning to go to the shower, Troy entered the closet.
“Hey,” she said.
He grunted, edged around her, starting unbuttoning his shirt. Although she was completely nude, he didn’t give her the slightest glance. She could remember a time when the spectacle of her naked body used to get him salivating.
“What’s going on with your brother?” she asked.
“Don’t want to get into it right now.” He still didn’t look at her, had his back turned as he undressed. “Maybe later.”
“If you didn’t know me, how old would you say I am?” she asked.
“What?” He turned, eyebrows arched.
“Do I have the body of a woman on the brink of forty?” She pulled in a deep breath, unconsciously sucking in her stomach. “Be honest.”
“What the hell brought this on?” he asked.
“Can you just answer me honestly?”
“You look good for your age, and you know it,” he said. “What’s this inquisition all about?”
“So I look good for my age. Thanks, but it sounds like a back-handed compliment.”
“Damn, baby. Don’t you have other things to worry about right now instead of my opinion on your looks? I know I do. I’m done talking about this.”
He snatched some fresh clothes off hangers and stormed out of the closet. She thought about pressing it further, but knew from experience that when Troy declared, I’m done talking about this that he was going to give her the silent treatment on the topic. His refusal to engage—when he decided he’d had enough—was a trait of his that had always annoyed her.
But this wasn’t over yet. Not even close.

Monica tapped on the guest room door.
“It’s me,” she said. “Ready for the tour?”
“A moment, please,” Grace said from inside.
Monica twisted the door knob, but the door was locked. Neither Pat nor Lily had ever locked their bedroom doors when they were visiting.
Shrugging, Monica waited in the hallway. She had changed into Croc flats, jeans, and a black long-sleeve blouse. Her homebody gear, as she liked to call it. She had no intention of leaving the house again that day.
