‘What’s going on?’ I asked when she came into the room, drying her hands with a tea towel.
‘Your mum’s moving in with me for a while. She’s renting out her place until she gets back on her feet again. Divorces aren’t cheap, I guess. I’ll be happy with the company.’
‘What about my room and my stuff ?’ I moaned, almost crying.
‘Your mother wants to collect some things tomorrow and bring them here. Oh, don’t worry, Phoebe,’ Nana said all cheery, ‘it’ll be fun.’
Oh shit. I couldn’t believe that Mum was renting out our house. She fought Dad hard to keep it, and now she was going to move out. Even if it was only for a little while, it was wrong.
I sat on the edge of the bed, trying to stop my mind from racing. Maybe Mum was more messed up than I’d imagined? Nana said something about Mum getting back on her feet. Did it mean that she was slipping with her work too? She’d always had to skip things with Dad and me, but that was because she was focused on her work, and I guess she needed to be.
‘Do you still want to watch something?’ Nana said.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, then opened them again. ‘What were you thinking of ?’
Nana was holding up a boxset of something called Outlander that had a pretty woman and a good-looking guy in olden style clothing on the cover. ‘Your mother says this is really good.’
We put it on. Oh my god, I didn’t know what to do when there was a sex scene in the first episode! Nana quickly said, ‘Cover your eyes and block your ears, Phoebe.’ I started giggling and it was good to forget about the things that were worrying me for a moment.
After watching two episodes of Outlander it was about ten o’clock, way past I won’t be too late time. I knew that even if Mum walked through the door in the next minute, completely sober, the following day was going to suck, moving my things from home to Nana’s place.
I checked my phone and saw there was a message from Jane:
It would have been great just to be able to tell Jane, ‘Sure, I’ll come. I don’t think there’ll be any chaos tomorrow. Mum will drive me there and pick me up whenever I let her know I’m ready.’ But I couldn’t trust Mum to do anything.
I lay in bed for a while and thought about Trent and basketball training during the week. Maybe I could ask Caroline if she wanted to come to training a bit earlier so that I could check out Trent? I wondered if I’d get the chance to talk with him again.
