  25. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

‘But we had a deal. We had a deal, Phoebe!’ I could see the vein pulsing in his forehead like it always did when he was angry. ‘It’s a two-way street. You expect me to tell you things that affect your life, Phoebe. If I knew that Mum had lost her licence, do you think I would have left you with her?’ He got out of his seat in frustration. and went to the sink to get a glass of water.

I looked at Caitlin with tears filling my eyes. ‘I’m sorry,’ she said.

‘Bloody hell, Phoebe,’ Dad said, wiping his mouth on his sleeve. ‘Do you think I would have left you with your mum if I knew?’ he questioned again.

I didn’t know what to say, so I went to my bedroom and lay back down. A moment later I could hear Dad and Caitlin arguing about whether or not I should have told them about Mum.

‘Mark, it’s not her fault and it’s not fair that you take out your frustration with Bronwyn on Phoebe,’ I heard Caitlin screech.

‘But Cait, if she’d told me, do you think any of this would have happened?’

‘Bronwyn told her not to say anything to you! Can you imagine what position that put her in?’ Caitlin argued.

I’d heard enough. I closed my door, put in my headphones and cranked up some music as loud as my bruised brain could handle.

It was a miserable windy weekend, and we never got to go for that walk.

CHAPTER 14

I was actually pleased to go back to school after spending the week at home, until our music teacher Ingrid reminded us that we now needed to step into full-scale rehearsals on the piece we had to perform for school music night, in front of the whole high school, which was three months away.

When my classmates went off to rehearsal rooms, I just sat at my desk. I hadn’t sung since the concussion. The thought of singing was hurting my head.

Ingrid came over to me. ‘Are you okay, Phoebe?’ I told her that I was scared to sing because of the concussion. ‘Let’s go into one of the rehearsal rooms and see how you go.’

I knew there was no way of getting out of it. I grabbed the USB with ‘Time After Time’ on it from my bag and plugged it into the speaker.
