  25. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

And then there he was. Trent in an apron collecting dishes from the table of mums. His blonde hair was sparkling in the golden hour sun. When he turned around, I was staring at him and he smiled at me as he walked past.

‘Would you like to come to a yoga class with me?’ Caitlin asked.

I said ‘Yes,’ before I even realised what was going on. I was off with the fairies.

‘Not hungry?’ Caitlin said, eying my half-eaten burger as she pushed her empty bowl to the side.

‘No, I am, waiting for it to digest a little,’ I told her, actually wanting to take my time to catch another glimpse of Trent.

Trent didn’t come back out of the shop until I’d finished my meal and when he walked towards us, I felt myself start to tremble.

‘Hey,’ he said, flashing me another smile.

I sat there staring.

‘You played good last night,’ he said.

I hadn’t even realised he had stayed around to watch the game.

‘You too,’ I managed to spit out.

‘Catch you around,’ he said as he walked away with our dishes. I was mesmerised. Yep, I think I liked him.

‘Well someone noticed you at tryouts,’ Caitlin said.

‘We should get going,’ I said, not really sure if Caitlin had picked up on my vibe.

When I looked at Caitlin she had a huge grin on her face. I was certain I was busted but then she said, ‘I’m so glad you’re going to come to a class.’

‘Class?’

‘Yeah, the yoga session.’

‘Oh right, yep.’ I realised what had happened.

Walking to the car, I felt like I was floating.

‘Want air con?’ Caitlin asked.

‘It’s all right,’ I said, enjoying the feel of the warm air as we travelled home.

When we were close to home, Mum finally messaged me back. Of course, right as my head was finally getting in a good place.

Mum: Can you come to Nana’s tomorrow night? I’ll be there early.

I was still so angry with Mum that I couldn’t even think about seeing her. She hadn’t even tried to smooth things over. She added:

Mum: And sorry about last week.

Right before I was going to tell her to piss off.

I wanted to put my phone away. But after about a minute I replied:

Phoebe: Where are you working tomorrow? Mum: At a jewellery launch in the city

It wasn’t like it was an art exhibition launch at a winery. I didn’t think there’d be much chance of there being heaps of booze at a jewellery launch, and I didn’t think there’d be too many people to cater for. Maybe she wouldn’t cancel on me this time.

Phoebe: I’ll be there.

I caught a train and a bus to Nana’s block of flats on Friday night. When I rocked up at about six o’clock and didn’t see Mum’s car parked out front, I thought, Here we go again.
