Chapters (34)
If you’re wondering how the rest of the day was, all you need to see is the in-class assignment my social studies teacher gave us, which I’ve attached here.
Social Studies Assignment In-Class
Name: Rodney
Please discuss THREE of the following topics, using examples.
1. How does the media influence public perception of major events?
2. Are some media sources more trustworthy than others? Explain your answer.
3. How does ownership of media influence coverage?
4. What is propaganda and how does it work?
5. Define sensationalism in media.
6. Discuss social media uses and abuses.
1: I think the media gets it wrong all the time, even though they should know better. They don’t know everything, even though they act like they do. And they don’t care about people and write about stories that ruin people’s lives. But the New York Times and the Washington Post are slightly better than some of the other ones because of how they research both sides and are not as biased.
2: The Las Vegas Profiler and the Scoundrels and Liars website are garbage because their reporters follow celebrities around and even their kids, which is unethical. Also, Fox News is propaganda because it just tells one side of the story.
6: Social media is terrible because people just try to get attention by making fun of other people and shaming people who might not have even done anything wrong. Also, selfies are boring and people should really get lives.
After we finished, the teacher read some of our answers out loud in front of everyone. At least she didn’t read mine out loud. I think she just gave us that assignment to find out what I’d say.
During the lunch hour, I saw at least six people watching the Van Johnson video and then staring at me. I didn’t go to the benches to see Dave in case Macii was there. Rigmor was at a track meet, so I didn’t see her at all. Ben and Fisherman invited me to go to the Gas Pro Stop and Shop convenience store to get candy. I said no because I wanted to be alone.
In our last period, which was gym class, Lallie told the teacher that I was staring at her in a way that made her feel upset and “violenated,” and the gym teacher told her the word was actually “violated.” Then he didn’t seem to know what to do because Macii spoke up and said she felt the same way about me. He said the girls should run laps outside on the track and the boys should run laps in the gym.
