“She’ll be back, little man,” said Greg, putting his hand on Ben’s shoulder. “Not too many who can do what she does. Lots of demand for her skills.”

“Is she a stuntwoman?” I asked.

“That’s right. Best in the business,” said Jiro. “Learned back home in Squamish, where people know how to push the line. She’s there now. In Canada.”

“Oh,” I said.

All three brothers stopped talking, and I didn’t ask any more questions because people sometimes like privacy. After all, I wasn’t about to tell them that my dad was in a treatment center because a movie star didn’t like to be hugged.

When I got home, I went into my room really fast so my mom wouldn’t see that my shirt was bloody at the back.

I closed the door and stood in the narrow space between my bed and the wall with the Ant-Man mirror on it. The mirror is cool because it has three sections. In one you look really small, in one you look big, and in one you look regular. I took off my shirt and twisted around so I could see. Even in the reflection where I was small, my back looked bad. It was turning purple and a strip of skin was peeled off and the skin underneath was red.

I put my shirt in a bag and put it under my bed so I could throw it out at school. Then I put on a dark T-shirt before I put on another shirt over top of it in case I started bleeding again.

Maybe I nearly died, but at least I had a new friend who was from a stunt family. If you come to visit, I think you’ll like Ben. But you’ll probably be smart enough not to jump. You know, sometimes I think I’d rather not be alive than not have friends. Do you ever feel that way? Probably not. It’s probably just me.

Take care, Lar.

Stay on the bank!

Hey, Larry,

I haven’t written for a while because things were going better here. Until they weren’t. Maybe you heard about it. In case you didn’t, here’s what happened. After I jumped in the river, Ben told everyone about it and people started coming up to me asking to see my back. It was one big bruise and it killed to move for a few days, but I pretended that I hardly felt anything.
