At any rate, imaginative sex is not a social program which its practitioners are obliged to publicly espouse. They may do so, of course, at their option.
Who does imaginative sex?
We don’t really know.
And it is not really any of our business.
VII. Disease
The practice of imaginative sex, because it brings partners together in exciting interdependences, into which strangers cannot intrude, tends to deepen and consolidate marriages. It is thus, for better or for worse, excellent for stabilizing and maintaining monogamous marriages. In short, anyone who is really in favor of monogamous marriage, and not merely monogamous economic and social arrangements, would be well advised to recommend and practice imaginative sex.
There is an interesting empirical corollary here, which may seem surprising but which, upon reflection, is obvious.
Monogamous marriage, by limiting sexual experiences to separate pairs of lovers, tends, through the simple device of sexual quarantine, to limit and reduce venereal disease. The chance to contract venereal disease increases geometrically with each new lover, because that lover, too, may have or have had lovers. Thus, interestingly, medically, monogamous marriage is the ideal sexual relation for minimizing venereal disease. If the man and wife are not infected to begin with and maintain the fidelity of their relation, they will never be infected. People do not pick up venereal disease from toilet seats. Accordingly, surprisingly, because of its effect in keeping husbands and wives fantastically engrossed in one another, and thus tending to make monogamous marriage an emotional necessity, imaginative sex, if generally practiced, would reduce considerably the venereal disease in the population. On the other hand, unfortunately, because of the unimaginative nature of most human beings and the crippling conditionings to which most of them have been subjected, imaginative sex is likely to be of little general consequence in reducing disease in the population, at least in this generation. Still, it is better than injections.
VIII. Requirements For Imaginative Sex
In effect there are three requirements for Imaginative Sex, each of which has been previously mentioned. They are affection, trust and imagination.
One might add, however, a willingness to engage in imaginative sex and humor.
