EPILOGUE

Well, this has indeed been an unusual book.

It is now finished.

Doubtless to many it has been quite a shocker, or, at least, eye opener. Perhaps to others it has merely articulated principles and love games with which, in substance or nature, they were familiar. I hope that it will not scandalize so much as stimulate. There was a time, of course, when the sight of a girl’s ankle might bring a blush to the matron’s cheek and a bumptious sputtering to the jowls of the bewhiskered squire. Those times are gone. Girls are no longer arrested for exhibiting their knees on public beaches. The outrage at their shamelessness, of course, was real. Those were genuine motions of indignation and horror. We have become inured or accustomed to the publicity of the body, perhaps too much so. But we tend, still, to conceal the mind, the imagination. They tend to remain, still, as once did the ankles and knees of the girl, delights of dark, pleasurable hours. I do not know whether this should be proclaimed right or wrong, but it is surely irrational. Hopefully irrational things are not right. Sex is too marvelous a potentiality of the total human organism, mind and body, to be restricted by irrational value limitations to the body, as though it were primarily a matter of manipulations and hygiene, of pinches and rubbings, towels and toilets. Sex, like love and music and chess, and coin collecting and gardening, and poetry and painting, can be a source of intricate delight. All that is required is the determined intrusion of intelligence and imagination into its sphere. Let those who can break their chains, break them. Let those who cannot, keep them.
