In a discussion of “normality” I think it is worth a moment’s attention to discuss what we might call square sex and Platonic sex. Platonic sex may be discussed briefly. It is sex with sex left out. The lover is primarily interested, if not totally interested, in the other’s mind. Why he does not settle for reading a book is not clear. Sometimes carnal intrusions, like noticing that Belinda has a good ass, might be admitted but it must be clearly understood, at all times, even the moment of orgasm presumably, that it is the higher union, the meeting of minds, which is to be much preferred. It is common knowledge, however, particularly among those who have tried both, that it is not always the latter which is much preferred. Pure mind is pretty much of a bore. Few men have set themselves to seduce a computer, nor, I think, should they be advised to do so. Women are better than computers. The opposite pole of Platonic sex, and, in my opinion, only scarcely less dull, and similarly forbidding, is what one might call Miller sex, after the novelist Henry Miller. It is the suggestion, puzzling at having come from a creature as high on the phylogenetic ladder as Mr. Miller, that the best sex or the ideal sex is “pure cunt” sex. In short, sex is a sort of electric connection between two organs, with the people left out. This seems to be needlessly complicated masturbation. It is surely inferior to the wet dream for in the wet dream there is commonly supporting imagery. Indeed, I do not really wish to downgrade Mr. Miller’s recommendation. It could well be that, sometime, for the charm and novelty of it, two individuals might wish to try “pure cunt” sex. I am not sure, however, how the woman tries it. It might be difficult for a woman to do even if she wished. “Pure cunt” sex, like most traditional sex, seems to be primarily for the man. The woman, perhaps startled out of her sleep, merely finds her ass grabbed, penetrated and fucked, all in forty or fifty seconds. She is like a female chimpanzee, caught by a dominant male, held and had in a matter of seconds. It seems to me that a woman might be interested in trying this once in a while, if only to find out what it is to be a female chimpanzee. On the other hand, there is little doubt that she will generally prefer to be a female human being. The experience, however zoologically interesting it is to her, is for her scarcely a sexual experience. It is interesting to note that “pure cunt” sex is, for most practical purposes, “normal” sex stripped of its frills, like paying token attention to your love partner; it is normal sex optimized; it is “normal” sex stream-lined, “normal” sex carried to its logical conclusion, reduced to its essentials. The major objection to Miller sex, as to Platonic sex, is that it replaces the natural love object, the human female, with something else, in one case a mind, in the other a portion of her anatomy. Both Platonic sex and Miller sex are forms of fetishism. What one wants, of course, is a whole human female, the unabridged edition, ass, mind, cunt, emotions, person. To take anything less is to be shortchanged.
