- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“Have you thought about going back to school? I see you as a lawyer.”
Jordan laughed. “Spencer said the same thing. Not sure if I’m ready for three more years of school and all that it takes to get into law school.”
“I’m pretty sure with your connections, any school in Texas would love to have you.”
“One step at a time.”
“Sure. But I’m going to keep pushing.”
She took a bite of barbecue. Again, moist and delicious. “What about you? You can’t spend the rest of your life taking care of me.”
“I’m here for the duration.”
“That’s okay for now. But I’ll kick you out if you get stagnant and don’t attempt something new,” Jordan warned. “I won’t hold you back.”
“And I’ll kick you in the ass if you don’t move forward.”
Jordan chuckled, and the two ate in silence. When they were finished, Avery collected the empty containers and dumped them in the grocery bag.
“Where to next?” Avery asked.
“Back to the crime scene where I was attacked,” Jordan said carefully.
“Why?”
“I want to experience it again.”
“Where’s the value?” Avery challenged.
“Maybe I just need to put a few memories to bed. Either way, I need to visit the place.”
“Do you have the address?”
Jordan recited it. “Burned in my brain.”
“Okay. Should we tell Spencer we’re doing this?”
“He would just get worked up and tell me not to.”
“Wise man.”
“Maybe, but he’s not in my shoes.”
Avery started the engine. “Okay, you’re the boss.”
The drive to the house where she had found Casey Andrews took twenty minutes. When Avery pulled up, she shut off the engine. “There’s still time to change your mind.”
Jordan reached for the door handle. “Nope.”
Out of the car, she opened her cane and faced the direction of the house. When she had originally come, she had parked about fifty yards away. All caution had deserted her when she had seen the lights.
“It’s not public knowledge, but the last victim’s eyes were taped closed. None of the other two or Casey Andrews had their eyes taped closed.”
Avery’s bracelets jangled closer. “He wanted you to know he’s aware of your vision.”
“I think so.”
“What about the first two victims?” Avery asked. “What, if anything, do they have to do with you?”
Jordan explained her theory. “Too close for comfort for me.”
Avery drew in a breath. “I’d say six degrees of separation, but it’s less than that.”
Anxiety vibrated in her sister’s tone, suggesting there was more she wanted to say. Jordan waited, but Avery did not offer more. “Let’s go inside.”
“There’s crime scene tape on the door.”
“I’m a cop,” Jordan said. “At least for now.”
“Okay.”
