- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“All the more reason for you not to be here. This killer has targeted you.”
“Not the first time a murderer has resented my presence,” she said.
Damn but the woman had a brass set. Hard not to admire it, but there was a fine line between bravery and foolishness. “I’ll escort the detective inside just this one time,” Spencer said.
“It’s your case,” Captain Lee said.
“And mine,” Jordan added.
Spencer tugged her forward, knowing at the rate she was going, she would talk her way out of this investigation. As they moved away, he said, “I thought you weren’t going to say much.”
“I’ve lost my sight, not my intelligence. And I refuse to think of myself as helpless.”
“You are.”
“When push comes to shove, I could hold my own.”
He did not doubt she could handle most civilians. But this killer was not like most people.
As they approached the front door, the faint scent of death reached out immediately. Jordan’s head cocked, and she looked in the direction of the bright forensic lights set up in the living room.
“Her hands and feet are bound,” Spencer said to Jordan. “There’s a bag over her head, and the outer layer of plastic is wound tightly around her body.”
“Is it Emma Powers?”
“She matches the picture, but identity will need to be confirmed.” He moved them closer and studied the victim’s features. Panic imprinted on once-smooth skin, and a gag filled her mouth. However, there was a marked difference. “She’s like the others, but her eyes are taped closed.”
“Eyes taped closed?” Jordan asked. “This is a first.”
He studied Jordan’s face, watching as she stared in the general direction of the body. Her brow furrowed.
“She can’t see. Like me,” she said.
“If that’s true, then he knows your injury status.” He thought about the unknown person in her room at the hospital and the vase of roses.
“Why me?” she asked, more to herself.
“You were featured in the media.”
“So were you. So was Captain Lee.”
“You’re the only female,” he said. “And you are Avery’s sister.”
Neither of them had to say it, but she and Avery fit the victim profile.
Footsteps approached, and then Lucas’s voice said, “Ranger Spencer. Detective Poe.”
“Lucas,” she said.
Lucas stared at her, his face reflecting too many questions. “How are you, Detective Poe?”
“I’ve had better days,” she said.
“Sorry to hear what happened.”
“Yeah, it sucks.”
“Lucas have a look inside?” Spencer asked.
“Right.”
Footsteps crossed the apartment, and they quickly returned to the door. “In the bedroom. There’s something that you need to see.” As soon as the word was out of his mouth, his frown deepened. “Sorry.”
“You can reference sight,” Jordan said. “I’m not going to fall apart.”
“Right. I know that,” Lucas said.
