When Madison came up for air, Sherry, equally out of breath, asked, “W-what was that?”

Madison bit her lip. “Danielle’s hopefully future sweetheart was checking us out.”

Was she kidding? “You almost kissed me senseless because she was looking at us?” Had Madison just been searching for a reason to kiss her, or had she lost her mind?

“I didn’t want her to think I’d been flirting with her or, um, something like that.”

Ignoring her shaky legs, she stepped back. “Because you were looking over?”

Madison inspected her shoes and shrugged.

This was ridiculous. As soon as they were back home, they would have a serious conversation about kissing. Not that it was really a hardship kissing her, but Madison couldn’t abuse their agreement whenever she felt like it.

Regarding the ridiculous situation with Danielle’s crush, she would put an end to this. Now. She grabbed Madison’s hand and dragged her off the dance floor and toward the mechanic and the guy.

Both were smiling at Madison and Sherry when they approached. “Hi,” they said.

“Hello.” Sherry let go of Madison’s hand. “I’m Sherry Miller. Danielle told me that you’re working for Bill. Is that right?”

To her surprise it was the man who answered. “We do. I’m Steve Tucker, and this charming beauty is Ruth Kent.”

Ruth snorted.

After they had shaken hands, Sherry pointed to her side. “This is my partner, Madison Fielding. She’s Danielle’s cousin.”

When Madison didn’t move, Sherry nudged her.

Belatedly, Madison shook hands with both. “Hi. Nice to meet you.”

“Steve and I were just saying what a cute couple you make.”

Madison stared at Ruth as if trying to read her thoughts.

Sherry bit her lip, trying not to laugh out loud. Madison was anything but subtle. “Thanks,” she said. “And you? Are you also a couple?”

Steve sighed. “I wish. But Ruth plays for your team.”

As much as Sherry could tell in the dim light, Ruth’s cheeks flushed.

Silence.

Out of nowhere, Madison said, “Well, then. It was nice talking to you. I’m sure we’ll get a chance to continue this later.”

Steve and Ruth blinked at her.

No wonder they were confused. Madison was downright rude.

“Nice meeting you,” Ruth said.

“Yeah,” Madison pulled Sherry away. “Same here.” After a few steps, she whispered into Sherry’s ear. “You are a genius.” A kiss on her cheek followed.

They really had to have a talk about all this kissing.

When they approached Danielle and Lillian’s table, Madison’s mood dimmed when she saw her grandmother talking to them.

“Does that mean you’ve fired Jonathan?” Madison heard Lillian say when they came closer.

Grandmother Eileen huffed. “He was an entirely incompetent butler. I’ve got no idea how I came to hire him in the first place.”

“You still haven’t told us what he did,” Lillian said.
