No, Madison’s lips had trembled when she’d kissed her.
But what did that mean?
Their conversation had gotten totally out of hand. And the kiss… Sherry couldn’t recall ever having been kissed in such a tender way.
Had that been Madison’s way of thanking Sherry for her words, or had it been an expression of her feelings?
She shook her head. No way could Madison have true feelings for her. Just because she liked Jake and cared about his well-being didn’t mean that Madison was feeling more for her than for any other woman she’d shared her bed with. And there had been quite a few women before Sherry.
So why had she allowed the kiss or at least not pulled back immediately afterward? Because I want to be close to her. Considering the circumstances, it was ridiculous, but she felt safe with Madison—even though Madison would probably get rid of them as soon as she received her inheritance.
Madison had changed so much since they had first met. As Sherry had told her, she was trying. And she hadn’t overstepped her boundaries in a long while now. Until tonight.
But had she really overstepped? No. Madison had done nothing that Sherry hadn’t wanted her to. God, she was losing her mind.
They had shared a short peck and nothing else. And pondering about it, or about how Madison might or might not have changed, wasn’t doing her any good.
They were both getting along, and that would allow them to play their roles even better. That was all that mattered.
Nodding to herself, she closed her eyes and fell asleep soon after.

Chapter 27
Madison got up from her movie theater seat. “Does anybody want more popcorn?”
“Me!” about half a dozen kids shouted.
Smiling into the dark, Sherry stood too. “I’m gonna help you.” She leaned toward Rita Mae. “Anything for you?”
“Maybe some more of that tasty walnut ice cream.”
“Coming right up.” Sherry slipped her hand into Madison’s, and together they walked out of the auditorium. Fighting their way through the throng of people waiting for another movie to begin, they eventually reached the concessions counter where Sherry had to let go of Madison’s hand.
On their way back, Sherry said, “Jake’s having a blast. This has to be the best birthday of his life.” Because her hands were full of popcorn and Rita Mae’s ice cream, she leaned her head briefly onto Madison’s shoulder. “Thank you.”
Madison smiled at her. “I’m having fun too. Isn’t the baby cute?”
“I would have thought you were more a fan of Elastigirl.” Sherry winked.
Was Madison blushing? “Get your mind out of the gutter. Jake has two things he talks about: Tony and The Incredibles. So seeing Incredibles 2 with him was kind of inevitable, don’t you think?”
