She hummed in agreement. “Since Sherry moved from the community college to the University, I spend more time with Jake.”
Sherry’s laughter made Madison whirl around. Bill had obviously told her something funny, and Sherry radiated happiness out of every pore.
Madison smiled.
“…yet?”
Madison blinked and turned back to Janice. “Um, what was that?”
Janice smirked. “Love looks good on you.” Before Madison could confirm to her that it did indeed feel damn good, Janice repeated her question. “Has Sherry decided on her major yet?”
“Yeah, she has. Psychology.”
“Really?”
Madison nodded. “I would run screaming, but she loves it, so I’m happy to support her.”
Janice smiled and sipped on her cocktail. “A few days back, I remembered our bet. You know which one?”
“Of course. We never decided who the winner was.” She hesitated. “I mean, you’re right. My plan didn’t work after all.”
“I wouldn’t say that. You were convincing enough to get a job at your grandmother’s firm. And if you had gone separate ways with Sherry back then—”
Again Madison’s gaze wandered to Sherry. “Then I would have become like my grandmother.” She shook her head. “I don’t regret anything.”
“I can see that,” Janice said. “Sherry is the best thing that’s ever happened to you.”
Madison nodded. “That she is.” No matter how much time passed, she would never forget how lucky she’d been to find her. This could have ended up totally differently. The thought made her shudder and brought her back to their stupid bet. “You know, it was a dumb bet to begin with. Nowadays, I would never play with anybody’s life like that.” She held up both hands. “And that is not an attempt of trying to get out of our bet. If you want, I can—”
“You’re right. It was pretty dumb. Let’s call it a truce. The story has a happy ending after all, and that’s what matters.”
“Happy ending? Sounds good, but—”
“But what?”
Madison looked at Sherry again. The love she felt for this wonderful woman was becoming stronger every day. Even after three years, Sherry still took her breath away. Smiling, she turned to Janice and said, “I have a feeling we’re just getting started.”
