“He’s your best friend. Does he buy the story?”

“Seems so. He hasn’t met her yet, though.” Madison drained her drink. “On Friday, he’ll come by with the guys. But I haven’t heard from him for a few days. I’ve got no idea if we’re still on.” Maybe it was silly, but she felt embarrassed to admit to Janice that he hadn’t even called to ask how living together with Jake and Sherry was going for her.

Aside from one text message, where he’d told her he would be going on a trip to Tijuana with the guys, he hadn’t contacted her all week.

Janice covered Madison’s hand with her own. “Hey, you okay?”

“Sure.”

Janice looked doubtful but didn’t press the subject.

A few minutes later, they said their goodbyes because Janice and her boyfriend were due over at his parents’.

What a boring life Janice had.

Chapter 15

“Thanks again for your help, Sherry.” Danielle started the car.

“You don’t have to thank me.” Still, Danielle’s words felt good.

When Danielle had to stop at a traffic light, she said, “You’re different than I imagined a girlfriend of Madison’s to be.”

“What do you mean…imagined? I’m sure you’ve met some of her ex-girlfriends.”

Danielle’s eyebrows rose. “She didn’t tell you? Oh crap. I should have kept my mouth shut.” Her shoulders slumped. “Please don’t say anything to her, but as far as I know, you’re her first girlfriend.”

That made no sense. Madison was in her twenties.

The traffic light turned green, and Danielle steered the car across the intersection. “Don’t get me wrong, she’s never been shy about jumping into bed with women. But they were usually just one-night stands or flings limited to…you now.”

“Oh. So, um, how did you imagine Madison’s first girlfriend would be?”

“Fake.”

A laugh burst out of Sherry. She liked Danielle. “Anything else?”

“I imagined her to be a hussy. A bitch with silicon in her breasts, Botox in her face, and nothing but money on her mind.”

Sherry whistled through her teeth. “Wow. You really don’t think much of Madison, do you?”

“You’re wrong. Considering her upbringing, she’s actually a pretty decent human being.”

“Upbringing? You mean because she’s rich?”

“I was talking more about Madison losing her parents within months of each other and then her grandfather not too long afterward. I never met him, but I think compared to Aunt Eileen, at least he wasn’t mean to her.”
