After her confrontation with him, Adele was unable to focus on work. She needed something to calm her down. Opening a desk drawer, she pulled out the bottle of brandy that was secreted inside. As she did so, Adele noticed how much her hands were trembling and her heart was pounding. Vowing not to let this become a habit, she poured a generous measure into a mug then drank it.
Although Glynn’s venomous words had frightened her, they’d also fired her up. How dare he assume that she wasn’t up to the job? She’d soon show him.
As the effects of the brandy took hold, calming her quivering insides, Adele tried mentally to prepare herself for the mammoth task that lay ahead. She had a formidable adversary in Glynn. The man was callous and relentless. And, if Adele was to beat him, she would need something more fiery than alcohol to see her through.
But despite her fear, Adele knew she could do it. After all, she’d had to deal with some tough opponents in the past. And she’d beaten them. So yes, she could do it. She would have to stay strong, though. Because this was going to be one hell of a contest!
