‘Hang on a minute,’ said Glynn, placing a placatory hand on Mike’s shoulder. ‘I said that’s the plan, but it’s not what’s gonna fuckin’ happen if I’ve got anything to do with it.’
Mike grinned. ‘OK, so what is gonna happen?’
‘Well, to start with, Pete’s gonna have a meeting with everyone to fill them in so I need you to pretend it’s all news to you. We don’t want him to suspect anything. Pretend to go along with it. Maybe even complain a bit about staying here, but don’t fuckin’ overdo it. We don’t want him to change the plan, ’cos he’s just played right into our fuckin’ hands.’
‘So come on, for fuck’s sake, what we gonna do?’
Glynn took a quick look over his shoulder to make sure no one could hear. Then he leaned in towards Mike and dropped his voice still further while he outlined his treacherous scheme.
Chapter 54
It wasn’t until Adele was in the taxi that Glynn and Mike’s cosy chat came back to her. The more she thought about it, the more she was convinced they were up to no good. Perhaps she should have a word with Peter and warn him. But what would she say? There was nothing to tell him other than the fact that she had a bad feeling.
Then she checked herself. Perhaps it was just her paranoia where Glynn was concerned. She didn’t trust him but that didn’t necessarily mean he was doing anything untoward. She smiled wryly at the absurdity of that thought; what he did for a living was untoward but she had come to recognise that as part of who he was.
Maybe they were just discussing the security business, which would explain why they looked a bit suspicious. After all, the very nature of the business was underhand. And Peter was in it as deep as them. She knew that her brother was no innocent and, as she had previously told him, she wanted no part in that side of his business.
Nevertheless, something was niggling away at her. It was perhaps a sixth sense, a bad feeling that Glynn and Mike were planning something. And if that was the case then perhaps Peter needed to know. With that in mind, she decided to ring him as soon as she got home.

Peter was taking the night off but he wasn’t having a good time. Earlier in the evening he’d received a call from Max’s wife, who was distraught. Apparently the old guy had popped his clogs. It had happened much sooner than Peter expected and he found himself feeling quite saddened by the news. Peter went to visit Max’s widow straight away and offered to help out in any way he could, including financially.
