Adele plonked herself down on the bed and looked around the room. Memories of her troubled childhood crowded her mind and tears filled her eyes. She’d spent so many sleepless hours in this room, fretting and trembling while her parents fought downstairs.
A lot had happened in the last few years and she wished she could roll the clock back and start again. But she couldn’t. And now she had these latest troubles to add to her misery.
She needed space to come to terms with what had happened in the club, and whilst her childhood home wasn’t ideal, she didn’t have much choice at the moment. So she’d seek refuge here for a couple of weeks till she could get her head around things. And she seriously hoped that by the time she returned to work, she’d find a way to cope with the fallout.
Chapter 37
Glynn arrived at Peter’s apartment not long after Adele had left. The cheeky smile and glint in his eye were absent; instead his chiselled features were strained.
‘How did it go?’ asked Peter once they were sitting down in the lounge.
‘It was fuckin’ hard work,’ said Glynn, ‘But don’t worry; no one will find anything in the club. We’ve got rid of every trace.’
‘What about the body?’
‘We’ve taken care of that, too; it’s been disposed of.’
Peter raised his eyebrows inquisitively until Glynn continued.
‘Let’s just say our friend Mike is pretty handy with an electric saw. It makes it easier to get rid of a body if it’s in pieces.’
‘OK, I get the picture,’ Peter said. ‘You sure no one will find it?’
‘Oh, yeah, I’m sure,’ said Glynn. ‘What about your Adele? Did you have a word with her and tell her to keep schtum?’
‘Yeah. It won’t be a problem. Adele knows when it’s best to keep quiet; don’t worry about that.’
‘Good, as long as she does,’ said Glynn. ‘’Cos if she spouts, we’re all in the shit.’
‘She knows that. She’s not gonna do anything stupid, don’t worry. I’ve told her; we’re all accessories. And she knows you were only trying to protect her.’
Glynn smiled at this last comment and Peter silently cursed himself. He shouldn’t have said that; he didn’t want to encourage Glynn where his sister was concerned.
‘What did she say about the guns?’ asked Glynn.
‘She was surprised, I must admit. So I told her how fuckin’ ruthless the nightclub business is and that we need them for self-protection. She swallowed it and she knows fuck all about us offering protection to other pubs and clubs. She just thinks we’re in the security business but she doesn’t know the details. I’d like to keep it that way, too.’
‘Well, I’m hardly gonna fuckin’ tell her, am I?’ said Glynn.
