Everything was still a bit of a blur for Adele. It had all happened so fast and she was traumatised. Although she wasn’t sure whether they were doing the right thing, her mind was in turmoil. So she relied on Peter’s guidance. Just like she had done on a previous occasion, years before. On the night when she killed her father.
They stepped outside the office. In her dazed state she registered everything that was happening. But it felt surreal; as though she wasn’t a part of it. Glynn was standing further up the corridor, trying to block her view of the body. Peter steered her quickly away but not before she had caught sight of the blood spatter. She shuddered as he led her towards the stairs and out of the building.
Mike arrived just as they were getting into Peter’s car.
‘He’s upstairs,’ said Peter. ‘Make sure you get rid of every trace.’
‘Don’t worry. We will do,’ Mike said.
Then Peter sped off and Adele sat in the passenger seat, numb with shock. Something devastating had taken place tonight. And she had been a party to it.
As a result, things would never be the same again. Just like the night when she killed her father, the aftereffects of this crime would surely mar her life for years to come.
Chapter 36
It was just before nine in the evening. Adele was sitting in the living room of Peter’s apartment downing more brandy. She had taken a shower and cleaned up the small wound on her neck, and now it was time to talk.
‘What will happen when the police find out?’ she asked Peter.
‘They won’t.’
‘But the men that escaped – won’t they report it?’
‘They wouldn’t dare. They know they’d be nicked for attempted burglary.’
‘But, surely, they’re going to realise their friend is missing. What if they do report it to the police? They might do it anonymously. Then we’ll be in trouble for not informing the cops in the first place.’
‘The police won’t take them seriously, especially if they come to the club, because they’ll find nothing. Glynn and Mike will scrub the place clean. There’ll be no trace that the man was ever there.’
‘But what about the body?’
‘Don’t worry about that. Glynn and Mike will take care of it.’
Adele stared blankly at him for some minutes. He seemed so calm when she was in turmoil! She couldn’t understand how he could be so matter-of-fact about Glynn killing a man. Her head was in a whirl, going over everything that had happened. She still had questions and was just about to speak again, but Peter beat her to it. She felt as though he knew what she was thinking.
