But her tears weren’t just because she had lost Glynn. They were mainly for herself. And as she thought about what her life had come to, she sobbed so hard that her body juddered.
No matter how much she tried she could never escape from her tortured past. And although she was sickened at the thought of what Glynn had done, was she really any different? Because, no matter what her reasons, she had killed, too. And in the most brutal way.
Would she ever be able to move on or would her past actions affect the rest of her life? Maybe she would always attract men like Glynn: cold-bloodied killers who made it their business to kill. Perhaps she just wasn’t good enough for anyone decent.
Eventually, she came to her senses. Realising what a sight she must look, she took a tissue out of her handbag and wiped her face. Then she went in search of a taxi to take her home. She needed to confront her brother about the things Glynn had told her. But at the moment she couldn’t face going back into the club. All she wanted was to get away.
In the morning, when she had calmed down, she would have a good think about what to do. Things had changed for her now that she knew what Glynn really was. And the fact that her brother had employed somebody like that made things a whole lot worse.
But what Adele didn’t know was that the man she had allowed into her bed was about to become a far bigger enemy to her and Peter than anybody she had ever had to stand up to during all her traumatic years behind bars.
Chapter 45
It was Monday morning. Adele had spent the weekend going over what Glynn had told her on Friday night, when she had last seen him. Instead of rushing round to Peter’s apartment to confront him the following day she had waited until now. She needed time to recover from the initial shock and to think about how to tackle Peter.
When she arrived at work, Peter was already there.
‘Alright, sis?’ he greeted when he saw her walking into his office. Then he smiled. ‘You’re a bit late, aren’t you?’ he said. ‘I was beginning to think you weren’t bothering.’
‘I wasn’t in a rush,’ she said, her face stern and her tone detached.
The smile slipped from his face, replaced by a look of concern as he picked up on her mood. ‘What’s wrong?’
She took a seat across the desk from him and took a deep, calming breath. ‘It’s about Glynn,’ she began.
‘Aah, I thought you’d had a barney when you disappeared from the club on Friday night. But I decided to leave you to it. I’m not one to interfere in all that relationship shit.’
‘It’s more than just a barney,’ she said.
