The amateur detectives stayed a fair distance behind the couple, who were soon on the move again, walking south on Fifth Avenue unaware they had company. At 42nd Street, the couple turned left and walked towards Grand Central Station with Zoe and Sean right behind. The masked man opened the big brass door to the train station allowing his wife to pass through.
“Oh my God, do you think they’re taking a train somewhere far away? What if they live in Connecticut?” said Sean. “I don’t have any money.”
“I’ve got my debit card,” said Zoe. “C’mon, we have to keep going. We can’t stop now.”
They followed the couple through the huge train station to the entrance of the Lexington Avenue subway line.
“They’re not going on a commuter train, they’re going for the subway,” said Zoe, pulling out her wallet. “I have my MetroCard. I’ll swipe us both through.”
The masked couple went through the turnstiles and walked down the stairs leading to the downtown trains. Moments later, all four stood on the platform. There were few people around so Zoe and Sean tried to hide behind a large pillar. Soon, a practically empty 6 Lexington Avenue Local pulled into the station with a screech and a hiss.
The sleuths got on at the opposite end of the same subway car as the masked couple. The car sat in the station without moving for nearly two minutes, when the bells sounded. Just as the doors were about to close, the 4 Express pulled in across the platform. Before Zoe and Sean could react, the masked couple jumped up and ran out to the express train. Zoe and Sean tried to follow but the doors of their car shut before they could get off. Seconds later their train pulled out of the station.
“Damn it,” Zoe shouted. “How did we let that happen?”
“Stay calm. We’ll get out at the next express stop. Maybe they’ll be there,” said Sean. “That will be 14th Street. That’s where we’ll get off.”
Their local train moved slowly and soon the express train carrying the masked couple blew right by them in the dark tunnel.
“Shit,” said Zoe, biting her lip. “We’re going to lose them. If they get away, that man is as good as dead.”

When the number 6 local pulled into 14th Street station, Zoe and Sean bolted off the train onto a deserted platform while looking in both directions.
“No. No. No,” shouted Zoe, stamping her feet. “Shit.” Frantically looking around, they spotted the nearest staircase and raced up the steps hoping the masked couple had gotten off at that station and were somewhere in the vicinity.
