Zoe nodded as they followed the masked couple walking east through the park. Careful to keep a safe distance behind, they hung back while the couple wandered up hills and around a pond and then finally exited the park on 96th Street and Fifth Avenue. Taking cover behind a tree, Zoe and Sean watched the couple look uptown and step off the curb into the street.
“Shit, they’re looking for a taxi,” Zoe gasped. “We’re going to lose them.”
“No we won’t, I’m getting us an Uber,” said Sean looking down at his phone.
“Good one, Sean.”
“I’m not just a pretty face.”
Minutes later a yellow cab stopped in front of the masked couple. As they climbed in, Sean and Zoe’s Uber drove up right behind the cab as it pulled away from the curb. The two sleuths jumped into the blue Honda Civic and told the driver to follow the yellow cab in front of them.
“I get it,” said the young Uber driver with a big smile, “This is like in one of those action movies. I can do this for you.”
The blue Honda Civic stayed right behind the yellow cab as the two vehicles moved swiftly down Fifth Avenue passing the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Plaza Hotel. At East 55th Street, the masked couple’s cab pulled over.
“We’ll get out here,” Sean shouted from the back seat.
“We’ve got to be careful they don’t see us,” said Zoe as they got out of the car. “Maybe we should walk on the other side of the street. That way we’ll be able to watch them from a distance without attracting attention.”
The masked couple walked slowly down Fifth Avenue looking in the windows of various shops, many of which were closed.
“Look at her,” said Zoe, her eyes never leaving the couple on the other side of the street. “She just conspired with her lover to kill her husband and now she’s window shopping with the man she’s going to have murdered. She’s quite the cool cucumber.”
“We don’t know for sure she’s planning a murder. Maybe they meant something else,” said Sean.
“Like what?”
“I don’t know,” he said, shaking his head. “Look, now they’re turning right and walking towards Rockefeller Center.”
Sean and Zoe darted across Fifth Avenue through the sparse city traffic pretending to window shop whenever they got too close to the couple. They followed them into the famous Rockefeller Plaza, home to an ice-skating rink in winter that turned into a restaurant in spring and summer. This year the plaza was empty, like everywhere else in New York City.
