Daryl filled her in as they sped up Central Park West. When they got to Zoe’s building two minutes later, Sean was already there talking to the doorman.
“But you’ve got to let me get upstairs,” said Sean.
“I’m sorry. Mr. Brandt left very specific instructions that no one was allowed up,” said the doorman. “I just can’t do it. Not after what happened.”
“It could be a matter of life or death,” Sean pleaded.
Daryl and Heather raced into the building flashing their badges. “Police. We need to get into the Brandt apartment immediately.”
“Mr. Brandt told me no one is supposed to go up there,” said the doorman.
“What about the word ‘police’ did you not understand?” said Heather. “Let’s go. Now.”

For the second time in a week, the doorman let the police into the Brandt’s apartment.
“Zoe,” shouted Sean as he moved quickly through the foyer.
“Ms. Brandt,” shouted Daryl. “Everyone spread out.”
“I’ll check the bedroom,” said Sean running down the long hallway.
Heather had just entered the kitchen when she heard Sean shout, “She’s here in the bedroom.”
Within moments all three stood over Zoe, passed out on the bed. Sean gently slapped her face while Daryl took her pulse. Heather quickly scanned the room and then went into the bathroom.
“I don’t like this,” said Daryl. “Her pulse is too weak. Let’s put her in the recovery position and get some help. Wake up, Zoe.”
He and Sean lifted the unconscious woman into a semi-prone position as Heather raced out of the bathroom holding an empty bottle of Ambien. “I found this in the sink. It was filled for sixty pills a week ago. It’s empty. Also, there’s puke in the toilet. I think she threw up before she passed out which could be a good thing.”
“Call 911,” shouted Daryl. Heather pulled out her phone and walked into the hall.
“Do you know if Ms. Brandt uses Ambien?” Daryl asked Sean while they rolled her over.
“Occasionally, but only a half a pill and not every day. At least that’s what she told me,” said Sean.
“EMS is on the way,” said Heather walking back into the bedroom with a phone to her ear. “The ambulance will be here in four minutes.” Picking up an empty glass from the nightstand she noticed a sliver of an ice cube at the bottom. She sniffed it. “Smells like bourbon.”
“Does Zoe take Ambien with alcohol?” said Daryl, one of his eyebrows raised.
“Sometimes,” said Sean nodding his head. “I keep telling her it’s dangerous but she never listens.”
Daryl leaned over close to Zoe to feel her breath on his cheek. “Her breathing is very shallow. Zoe, wake up,” he said, shaking her. There was no response. “If she took that entire bottle, this is extremely serious.”
