Chapters (62)
“Hold on, she’s texting someone about a hair appointment. Wait a second, something’s different. Before, she was using an Android phone and now she’s got an iPhone.”
“What do you think that means?” said Sean.
Zoe picked up her phone from the table and looked directly at her friend’s face. “She’s obviously got a burner phone. Sean, we’ve got to call the police right now. That woman is obviously planning to murder her husband.”
“We don’t know for sure that’s what’s happening.”
“What else could it be?” said Zoe, getting excited. “It seems pretty clear to me. The woman in the mask and Sr. Bello are going to kill her husband on Thursday.”
“Maybe her husband committed a heinous crime or maybe he beats her and they’re going to expose him, not actually kill him. Maybe it’s a happy thing? Maybe they’re the good guys?”
“Seriously Sean?” said Zoe, scrunching up her forehead while staring him down. “They’re totally plotting to murder her husband. We’ve got to follow them. Are you with me?”
Sean reluctantly nodded. “I guess.”

“You’ve got to come over here right now,” shouted Zoe to Sean as she got up from the chair, her eyes still fixed on the couple in the park. “No, no, no. Shit. The woman’s getting up. We’re going to lose them. Wait… she’s walking over to the man and standing in front of him. I can’t see her face because of her damn mask. She must be talking because her head and hands are moving. If she’s not talking, she’s got a really bad tic.”
“She’s probably talking,” said Sean, rolling his eyes. “What’s happening now?”
“Nothing. She’s just standing there, staring at him. She’s turning around and facing me. She’s wearing a gold chain necklace with a charm of the letters GG. Those must be her initials.”
“Who wears both of their initials on a necklace,” said Sean. “It’s either the first initial or the whole first name spelled out. Nobody wears both.”
“Maybe her name is Gigi and she spells it GG?” said Zoe.
“No one does that either. I’m walking out the door right now,” said Sean. “Keep your eyes on them. I’ll be there in eight minutes.”
“I’ll meet you downstairs in front of my building,” said Zoe, grabbing her bag, mask and a pair of plastic gloves.
With her adrenaline pumping, Zoe adjusted her mask as she got in the elevator. When the doors opened in the lobby, an older, gray-haired doorman sporting a red-white-and-blue striped mask waved to her. “That you, Mrs. Brandt? Hard to tell who anyone is these days.”
