“I agree, we’re totally finished,” said Zoe getting up and looking out the window. Reaching for the binoculars on a nearby table, she held them up to her eyes and looked down on the street below while fiddling with the focus controls. “It was definitely too real. After everything that happened I promise, I’m so over it. I will never ever do that… wait… what? Holy shit. Oh my God, Sean, you’re not going to believe what I see right now. There’s this hulking bald man in a blue sweatshirt. He looks German. He’s walking a black poodle with a red collar. He’s following this platinum blonde woman who is talking on her phone. She has no idea he’s behind her. I think I see a knife sticking out of his sleeve and…”

After my editor, Clare Law, finished reading this manuscript, she remarked that in some ways the main character reminded her of a book she was currently reading to her children—Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. That was my favorite book when I was a kid. I even had my own spy route when I was ten. It hadn’t occurred to me, but Clare was absolutely right, I had channeled my inner Harriet when creating the character of Zoe Brandt.

Huge thanks to my always first readers, Peter Black, Diane McGarvey and Marlene Pedersen. Your comments and observations helped the book take form. Thank you to my editor Clare Law, who tightened up the entire book, pointed out the obvious and “got” my sense of humor. Also, to my publisher Betsy Reavley who with a keen eye asked me to do rewrites that changed the book for the better. And as always, thanks to all the folks on the Bloodhound Books team who helped shape this novel and get it ready for the world.

To get the facts straight in this book, I consulted with both NYC police officers as well as federal agents who have asked not to be named but I am very grateful for the input. I’d also like to thank Tom Conners (former police officer) and his brother, Patrick Conners (former US Postal Service employee) for their help in keeping police and postal sections authentic.
