“Is that unusual?” said Sr. Bello, having only joined the firm a couple of months earlier and not yet met Jordan Spaulding.
“He runs hot and cold,” said the co-worker, shrugging. “Sometimes he doesn’t come to the meeting for months and then he shows up every week. I prefer it when he’s not there. He makes everyone nervous.”
Sr. Bello pushed open the glass door to the conference room. Eleven other managers were already seated around a large, glossy wooden table. He found an empty seat and got settled as the glass door opened again. A tall man entered the room sheepishly and quietly took a seat.
“Who’s that?” whispered Sr. Bello to the person on his left. “Haven’t seen him before.”
“I forget his name,” said his colleague. “I think he’s a senior analyst from Chicago. I guess that means you’re not the new kid on the block anymore.” Sr. Bello nodded to the new analyst across the table who responded with a smile and a quick but subtle wave.
Outside the conference room door there was a commotion as the CEO of CIG, Jordan Spaulding, blasted into the room. “Good morning everyone,” said the CEO in a booming voice as he took his seat at the head of the table. “The sun is shining. It’s a beautiful day. No doubt you all have wonderful numbers for me. Let’s try not to ruin my good mood.”
“Good morning,” murmured several people in the room.
“I see some new faces since I was last here,” said Jordan looking down at a piece of paper. “Which one of you is Kevin Bishop?”
Conner Brandt raised his hand. “I’m Kevin Bishop. Nice to finally meet you, Jordan.”
Undercover on the CIG case for months, Conner expected the FBI would soon have enough solid evidence to put Spaulding and all of his minions behind bars. From what they had discovered so far, Jordan Spaulding was a bigger fraudster than anyone had dreamed.

At his desk at 2pm that Wednesday, Daryl Williams’ eyes were glued to a spreadsheet of Thayer and Co employees.
“Here’s that report you wanted,” said Manny Perez, one of the young police officers on the Strangler task force as he placed a large brown envelope on Daryl’s desk. When Daryl minimized the Thayer document it revealed another image underneath—a flag. The picture caught the young officer’s eye.
“You planning a little trip to Mexico, detective?” said Manny with a smile.
“Mexico?” said Daryl looking up at him. “What are you talking about?”
“You have a Mexican flag on your screen.”
“It’s an Italian flag,” said Daryl, opening the large envelope the young man had just placed on his desk.
