“Completely,” I assured her. “I remember how isolated I felt when I first moved here. People were kind to me, and I couldn’t possibly forgive myself if I missed the opportunity to repay the favor by passing it on to someone else.”
“Wow,” she said again. “Thank you. I can’t tell you how—”
“Zoe!” Zach’s voice boomed from the other side of the sound stage.
“On my way!” She grinned and squeezed my arm. “Thanks, Mrs. Harrington.”
“It’s Grace!” I laughed as she sprinted toward a palm tree, under which numerous directors had huddled. Hearing people call me Mrs. Harrington never failed to make me laugh.
Jack sauntered over and planted a kiss on my cheek. “Making friends?”
“Yep. That’s Zoe. She’s Zach’s new assistant, sort of. An intern with the production company, but they passed her on to him when she showed up this morning. I invited her to dinner tonight.”
He raised his eyebrows. “Oh really? Its not like you to invite near-strangers for dinner.”
I shrugged and smiled. “I know, but I think God’s starting something there.”
“Ah,” he said with understanding. “Then invite away!” With that, he kissed me once more and turned back to the rehearsal.
That night at dinner, Jack and I did our best to make Zoe comfortable, although it was obvious she was a little overwhelmed. I’d finally stopped seeing Jack the way the world did, and I forgot sometimes how intimidating it could be just to hang out with him. He was just Jack, my husband, the guy who left dishes in the sink right next to the dishwasher, the guy who was able to lose a pen ten seconds after picking it up, the guy who sang television show theme songs (badly) in the shower in the morning to wake me up.
In the weeks that followed, I made it a point to connect with Zoe every morning when we first arrived on the set. We’d spend her breaks together, and I’d invite her over whenever I could. It was clear to both Jack and me that God had set us in her life for one reason or another, and we continually looked for ways we could show her our friendship and faith. Her internship was only for the length of the project, and we wanted to make every day of it count.
