The door opened, and a gorgeous woman in an Oriental-inspired dress stood in front of me. I was about to ask if Grace was home, assuming that this was her roommate or a friend, when I realized it was Grace. She’d cut her hair drastically, and it was darker, but it was definitely her. And she was stunning. “Wow!” was the first thing out of my mouth, and I was instantly embarrassed. Brilliant; great start, Harrington. She blushed and ducked her head, and I chuckled. “Sorry; the filter between my brain and my mouth is apparently out of order. But you do look amazing”
She looked back and smiled, obviously self-conscious. “Thank you.
“Are you ready to go, or do you need a minute?”
“No, I’m ready.” She reached back to a table by the door and took hold of a small black purse and a satin shawl. She locked the door behind her, and I led the way down to the car. A dog-walking neighbor paused to watch from the other side of the street, and I wondered for the umpteenth time what Grace would make of all the attention. I didn’t know her well enough to guess. I realized I didn’t know her at all.
The driver opened the door and helped her into the car, and I settled in across from her. She folded her shawl and placed it in her lap, then shot me a sheepish grin. “I’m just going to apologize up front in case I do something completely idiotic tonight. I haven’t the foggiest idea what to expect, and I am terrified I’m going to embarrass you. So, if that happens, forgive me.” She shrank back a bit in her seat, her gaze steady on me.
I chuckled and shook my head. “Believe me, you have nothing to worry about. This isn’t nearly as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be. So little happens there’s hardly any time to screw anything up. Care for a drink?” I motioned to the wet bar that ran the length of the limo and slid down the seat toward the minifridge. Even if she didn’t want one, I was definitely going to need one; I was suddenly just as worried I’d be the one doing something idiotic.
GRACE
I AM IN A STRETCH limousine with Jack Harrington. It’s actually happening. I’m really here. There’s even a refrigerator! Oh my gosh, he’s talking to me. Be casual. Be witty. Be articulate.
“Oh, no thanks. This dress is the most expensive thing I’ve ever purchased; drinking in a moving vehicle would just be begging for a giant spill.”
