“Ah, gotcha. And why is that, you think?” I relayed our conversation to him, along with Kate’s and Todd’s reactions. “Yeah, I can see how you’d be worried about whether or not this was the right thing. But let me ask you something. Do you think what you believe is true?”
For once I felt I could answer with certainty. “Yes.”
“And do you think God can and will take care of you?”
“Yes.”
“And what is more important: following God or following your career?”
The truth hurt, but it was still truth, regardless of how much I didn’t like it. “I guess I have to say God if I said yes to all that other stuff, huh?”
He shrugged. “Well, no, you don’t have to, but that would be kind of like saying you believed one plus one equals two, but you were still going to put down three as your answer. See what I’m saying?”
I groaned inwardly and rubbed my face. “Bottom line, Greg, is that I don’t know that I believe enough to take that big a risk. Frankly, I barely know the guy, you know? For all I know He’s some giant shyster in the sky who puts on a good show for newcomers like me and then yanks the rug out from under them.” Some of the stories from the Bible I’d read seemed to confirm this for me, but I didn’t want to bring them up right now. “I mean, that’s a lot of change all at once: having to say I believe in God, and Jesus, and having to give up so much—”
“What are you giving up right now?”
“Huh?”
Greg shifted in his chair. “What are you giving up?”
It seemed obvious to me. “Um, my life”
“And how much control have you really had over that?”
“Well,” I said defensively, “I made all the decisions; that’s a lot of control, if you ask me.”
“And how was that working for you?”
This conversation was ticking me off. “Look, Greg, I don’t like to rub it in, but do you know how much money I make? Do you have any idea what kind of life I live?”
“Ah, so your job is your life, that’s all there is to it.”
“No, it’s not all, but it’s a big part.”
“And you choose the roles?”
“Yes!”
“And you choose how well they do?”
“Well obviously not—”
“And you decide how the critics are going to judge the movie and you, and how the public perceives you?”
I rolled my eyes, “No, but even so, I’ve been—”
