“Actually, if you want, I could go see if he’s free right now. That way you can talk to him now and then again later if you think of more questions. It wasn’t a very full crowd, so he probably just went back to his office once everyone left. Want me to check?”
He seemed to hesitate for a moment and then nodded firmly. “Sure. Thanks.”
The second I was outside the room I nearly screamed with astonishment. I dashed to Greg’s office just down the hall and knocked with a shaking hand.
A voice from within the office beckoned me to enter, and I found Greg with his feet propped up on his desk, reading Rolling Stone. “Ah, Grace! Hey, great job up there. What’s up?”
I shut the door behind me and took a deep breath. “Jack Harrington is here; you knew that, right?”
His feet hit the floor as he motioned me to a seat, smiling. “Yeah; did he attend the first concert?” I nodded. “And?”
“And he liked it. I think. He wants to go to the next one, anyway—and he wants to talk to you.”
Greg’s eyes bulged as he let out a laugh. “Fantastic! Absolutely, send him in.”
I dashed back to the associate pastors office, then paused outside the door to take a deep breath, not wanting to seem flustered. I opened the door and tried to be casual. “He’s in his office, which is right down the hall. He said he has some time now if you want to talk before the next concert.”
Jack seemed to waver again, but then headed for the door. “Okay.”
I led him down the hall. “Greg, this is Jack Harrington,” I said smoothly as Greg advanced to shake Jack’s hand. He showed Jack to a chair and I quickly left the office, then half flew back to the other room where Jane and Missy were praying.
“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh,” I mumbled as I collapsed into a chair near the door. “Can you guys believe this? Tell me about the concert; what did he do, what was he like?”
Jane and Missy sat down and smiled. “He didn’t really say anything,” Missy said, shrugging. “He seemed to enjoy it, though. He definitely listened to Greg’s message.” She giggled. “Man, Grace, how great would this be.”
“I’m going to keep praying,” Jane announced as she settled back in her chair and closed her eyes. Missy nodded and did the same. A faint smile played on her lips and I watched her, feeling jealous that prayer was not the first thing on my mind the way it was for these two. I tried to follow their example, but my mind was racing; I couldn’t concentrate long enough to pray an entire thought before my imagination was wandering to visions of Jack and me together. This would make everything perfect.
