And she hadn’t gushed or gotten all giggly when I’d shown up either. I rarely met women who didn’t get tongue-tied or star-struck when they met me for the first time. She’d been totally cool—or as cool as someone could be when a celebrity appeared on her doorstep and gave her a car.
She was unusual. I couldn’t deny the fact that I was tempted to come up with other ways to see her. I just wasn’t sure it was a good idea.
I tried to clear my head and halfheartedly started in on the stuff Kate brought. I scanned the scripts, then moved on to the fan mail. I only got through a couple before realizing it was pointless; I wasn’t really concentrating on anything right now. I just couldn’t get Grace off my mind.
Then I started wondering if I could come up with any other excuses to see her again. Not that I would necessarily make use of such an opportunity, even if one presented itself. But what if … ?
My eyes fell on the marketing packet Kate had left with me for Destiny Awaits. It contained the release dates for trailers and the movie itself, as well as the premiere information. It wasn’t a megamovie of any sort, so the festivities were not going to be anything ultraexciting or unusual. But it would still be nice to go with a date.
Hmm.
Here was my chance. Was I willing to take it? I drew up a mental list. Pro: I’d get to see her again. Con: the media would see her too. Pro: it would be better than going by myself. Con: rumors would run rampant. Pro: maybe something would come of it. Con: maybe something would come of it.
I stood and walked into my bedroom to riffle through a stack of papers. I pulled a sheet from the middle and stared at it. Her phone number. I brought it back into the living room with me, where I sat back down and began to think.
Then it struck me that she might already be in a relationship. Wouldn’t that suck: to call and make a move and then find out she’s already got a boyfriend! I wracked my brain, trying to think of anything I’d seen or she’d said that would tell me one way or the other. I couldn’t come up with anything.
Ah … but the night of the accident two women had come in for her. No one had mentioned a boyfriend or husband or fiancé or anything like that. I couldn’t remember seeing any diamond or wedding band on her finger—not that I’d been looking, either. But certainly he would have come to the hospital that night, if there was a he in the picture at all. He would have been there during visiting hours.
