The look on his face had changed. He still looked skeptical, but there was a hint of curiosity in his face now. “We were waiting for the ambulance. You were unconscious, then you woke up and tried to talk, and then you looked at me, and then you stopped breathing.”
The image of his face, scared, looking at me while music swirled around me flashed in my head. Vision or dream or reality? “Then what?”
He thought for a minute. “Then the ambulance came, they pulled the door off your car, and they brought you here.”
I winced. “And you’re all right?”
He nodded and shrugged. “Amazingly, yeah. Some mild whiplash and overall ache, but that’s it.”
“And the other guy?”
“About the same as me.”
“Your car? And the other one?”
He gave a small smile. “I was getting tired of it, anyway; this gave me a good excuse to get a new one.”
I groaned and covered my eyes with my uninjured hand. “Oh … I’m so sorry.”
He chuckled. “Seriously, its all right. Don’t worry about it; replacing it is no problem. And the other guy just had a bashed-up front end, that’s all. Nothing bad. No one’s fault, as far as I’m concerned.”
I sighed and dropped my hand down to the bed. “What a mess,” I said aloud to myself. It was quiet for a moment as I stared down at my lap, thinking about the implications of all this. It was very difficult to relax and not let any of it worry me, as Jane had admonished me to do.
I looked back at Jack, and he was watching me. I was suddenly very aware of how awful I looked. I could feel myself blushing, but he didn’t seem to notice—or care, at any rate. Then he was aware of me watching him watch me, and he averted his eyes and looked past the bed to the machines beside me.
He grinned and said, “You’re not going to start glowing and say something like, I’m an angel sent by God,’ are you?”
I let out a laugh, but it only lasted a second before my ribs reminded me they were broken. I gasped in pain and let out a chuckle at the same time. Jack looked alarmed. “Oh, I’m sorry! Are you okay?”
I collapsed against the bed and tried to smile. “Well, I promise I’m not an angel, and I won’t glow unless they’ve injected me with uranium or something.” I grinned, then shrugged. “Take it or leave it; I’m just the messenger, you know? But I can’t deny that it was God who gave it to me; I know it was Him. Don’t ask me how, I just know.”
“So what exactly was this … vision?”
