My therapists know I’m here, and what I’m doing, and they don’t think it’s the worst thing, so that’s cool. We talked a lot about boundaries and expectations, and I think I’m sort of prepared for whatever happens. And if I’m not, I’ve got all their numbers programmed into my phone. Plus Gray’s. And Hector’s. And Quinn’s.
I’m still living with Gray and will be for the foreseeable future, my parents effectively cut off. We tried some family therapy with them, and it didn’t work. Like, at all. So now it’s just me and Gray mostly. It’s a small family, but a good one. She still works for The Geekery, though, and managed to convince—okay, blackmail—my dad into calling a truce between him and Verona, which was pretty damn cool. She travels a lot less for work now too, and when she has to go, one of my friends stays over or my aunt Mary comes. It used to bother me that I needed a babysitter, but now I know what it really is: a solid support system, which is something that I never had before.
It’s kind of nice.
I feel healthier than I ever have. Hector, Quinn, and I even started recording ourselves skating, and our YouTube channel is getting tons of hits. We plan to turn it into an actual web show once the new camera we ordered comes in. Who knows if anything will ever come of it, but it’s nice to have goals and dreams of my own for once.
There are still a lot of dark times; there’s no fix for that. But for the first time it feels like surviving them is an option—an option I really want, no matter what happens with Peak today, or anybody else for that matter. So that’s new.
I run my hands through my hair and sit up a little straighter. I don’t know how it will go when she gets here, but I miss her. Now that I’m sure I’m not just trying to fill up my empty spaces with her love, we all—meaning my therapists and me—thought it was probably okay to respond to the text she sent me the other day. We even had a plan for if she didn’t text again after my response, which would have sucked but also been okay.
But I’m so glad that she did.
