- Meet Melissa
“That sounds like something I could get behind, and it would allow me to still work with you, which I’m really enjoying.”
Madigan looked up at him and smiled. “I’d take your class.”
“Me too,” Chloe said, and the other girls agreed.
“I could hook you up with my buddy Brock,” Maverick suggested. “He owns a boxing club in Eastham, and his wife, Cree, is a good friend of mine and the daughter of a Dark Knights family in Biggs’s chapter.”
“I appreciate that, but I don’t know the first thing about starting that type of business. I’ll have to do some research first. I have been wanting to join a gym. I’ll have to check that one out.”
“Why don’t we connect you with Diesel and Tracey? They can tell you everything you need to know about the business end, and you’re dating one hell of a businesswoman, who can probably also offer some guidance.” Preacher winked at Madigan.
“I would love to help.” Madigan turned so she could see him. “Diesel and Tracey are really nice.”
Several of the guys cleared their throats, and Madigan looked at them with irritation. “What?”
“I don’t know that I’d classify Diesel as nice,” Blaine said.
“The man doesn’t speak. He grunts,” Baz added.
“Boys, be nice.” Reba looked at Tobias and said, “Diesel is a lot like Tank. He’s hard and gruff, and in some ways, he’s like you, too. A man of few words.”
Tobias nodded. “Sounds like we’ll get along just fine.”
“If you’re serious, I could also hook you up with my buddy Cory’s older brother, Bastian,” Gunner offered. “He’s a vigilante of sorts. Families hire him to get their friends and relatives out of bad situations. He’s helped a lot of people find their way to safety.”
“I’d really like to look into teaching self-defense, and I’ll think about your buddy Bastian,” Tobias said. “Preacher, if you don’t mind, I’d appreciate an introduction to Diesel and Tracey.”
“I’ll make it happen this week.”
With the exception of brief periods of time, when his first boss at the gas station had mentored him toward a better life, and later when Kevin had opened the door to fighting, Tobias had felt like he’d had to fight for everything he’d ever gotten. He couldn’t believe Madigan’s family was trying to help him, despite the way things had started and the tension between him and Blaine. He’d thought that being with Madigan and having a job he enjoyed were more than he could ever ask for. But the support from Madigan’s family? That brought a level of happiness he’d never expected…and a dose of guilt that weighed heavily on his shoulders.
