- Meet Melissa
He knew he was walking into a spider’s web. Nothing about this was going to be easy, but they’d talked about that when he’d asked if he could come with her this morning to speak with her parents. He wasn’t sure going in there would help the situation with her brothers, but if leaving had taught him one thing, it was that he’d do whatever it took to be with her. “I told you if we’re going to be together, I’m not hiding anything from your family. We started off on the wrong foot, and I want to rectify that. Facing them all at once just speeds things up.”
“Or brings it to a screaming halt,” she said sarcastically. “Are you sure you want to go in there?”
“Are you sure you want to be with me?”
“Yes,” she said adamantly.
He ran the backs of his fingers down her cheek, so damn thankful for her forgiveness. “Then let’s do this. I’ll say my piece and take off to see my grandfather so you can have time with your family.”
As they made their way up the driveway, he could feel Madigan steeling herself for whatever came their way, and he was right there with her. “You okay?”
“I will be.” She pulled open the door, and as he followed her into the kitchen, the smell of bacon, eggs, and something freshly baked surrounded them, throwing Tobias back to his childhood. A woman with the same mahogany hair as Madigan, who could only be her mother, was standing at the stove, transferring bacon from a pan to a platter as Zander, wearing his black leather vest, snagged a slice and a tough-looking man with slicked-back silver-and-black hair and tattooed arms strode into the kitchen with Blaine, their serious eyes landing on him. Both men were also wearing their leather vests.
“Hi,” Madigan said, her nervousness coming out in her clipped tone, drawing the attention of her mother and Zander.
“What the hell is he doing here?” Blaine snapped.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Madigan challenged.
The older guy glared at Blaine and Madigan. “That’s enough.”
Zeke, Maverick, and a tall, thin blonde came into the kitchen, their curious gazes landing on Tobias as two dogs trotted past them, heading for Madigan. Zeke and Maverick were also sporting their vests, magnifying Tobias’s feeling of being an outsider to their closely knit family.
“Way to ambush me, Dad,” Madigan said, petting the dogs. “I thought I was having breakfast with you, Mom, and Grandpa.”
Dad. Tobias mentally ticked off what he knew about her father. He was president of the motorcycle club, owned a renovation company, had raised four overprotective sons and a fierce daughter, and his brother and sister-in-law owned the Salty Hog.
