- Meet Melissa
“It made sense to me, too. She was an adult, living with the father of her child. But then I started noticing Kevin’s moods ramping up. He was more aggressive when he was in the ring, and he’d fly off the handle at some of the guys. And when we’d get together with Michelle and Carrie, he was even more upbeat and outrageous, which I now know was his way of distracting me from the changes in my sister. Then he had a match in Vegas, and we all went to cheer him on. When we were walking into the hotel, Carrie tripped, and I caught her by the arm. She cried out, and it was too loud and painful for the way I had touched her. When I lifted her sleeve, I saw bruises. She said she’d forgotten to eat the day before and had passed out and Kevin had caught her the same way I had, by the arm. Something didn’t sit right with me, and I tried to pull her aside and talk to her, but she clammed up. I asked Michelle to try to talk with her, but she thought I was overreacting.”
“I don’t like where this is going,” Madigan said anxiously.
“It’s not pretty. Do you want me to stop?”
“No, go on.”
“That night Kevin won his match, and we all went to a club to celebrate. Carrie didn’t drink, of course. I was never a big drinker, and Kevin hadn’t been either, as far as I knew, but that night he drank a lot. He made a comment about a woman at the bar, and I could see how much it hurt Carrie. She excused herself to go to the bathroom, and when Michelle went with her, I gave Kevin hell for it. He wasn’t normally like that, but like I said, things had seemed off lately. Anyway, the girls came back, and I could tell Carrie had been crying. Kevin made a big show of apologizing and blamed it on the beer. I suggested we take off, but it was his big night and he wanted to stay, so I went to get us waters, figuring it was time to cut him off. When I got back to the table, he and Carrie were gone. Michelle said they got into an argument, and Carrie had gone to the restroom again. Michelle got up to follow her, but Kevin said he’d make sure she was okay.”
